From Incarceration to Education

Student organizers, Lily Gonzalez, Adrian Caceras, and Maria Elena Morales were invited to share our experience as formerly incarcerated people in higher education at the Beyond the Bars: Transcending the Punishment Paradigm on March 2-5, 2017.
"Transformation and Empowerment: The Intersection of Formerly Incarcerated People and Higher Education"
We will speak to the transformation and empowerment that higher education has made in our lives. We will address our individual roles in creating a student organization on our respective campus and our current project to create a statewide network of formerly incarcerated student organizations. Our goal is to highlight the role formerly incarcerated students are taking to make higher education accessible.
Three of us are currently students at various community colleges and universities and are unable to raise this type of money in two weeks without the love and support of all of you who have mentored and cheered us on as we continue to set the example of the importance of higher education for formerly incarcerated people. We are asking for any type of help to cover our transportation and hotel costs for three days to in New York City. We are all very excited for this opportunity and know that through our personal narratives we will be sharing a message of change that will carry back to our various colleges.
From all of Us, Thank You all for your Love and Support!
Beyond the Bars: Transcending the Punishment Paradigm
This conference brings together a trans-disciplinary group to advance the work of ending mass incarceration and building a just and safe society. Each year scholars, students, activists, advocates, policy makers, government officials and those who have been most directly impacted by incarceration come together for three days to deepen our collective analysis, strengthen our networks and make visible the many ways those from the academy and the community can engage in action.
