Sheridan's Study Abroad in Vienna

Dear Family and Friends,
I am so grateful for your friendship and encouragement as I continue to study vocal music education and piano here at Houghton College. The past 2 ½ years have been a rich experience in music theory, choir, piano lessons, music, and Christian worship, as well as Spanish, education, theology and so much more!
Houghton has many study-abroad opportunities; for example, my roommates have and will be studying abroad in London, Germany, and Tanzania. The music education degree requirements, however, are extensive such that studying abroad is not typically possible. But I’m thrilled to say that I recently found the opportunity to partake in a humanities course in Vienna this spring! Under the direction of a Houghton professor, we will study the changes in philosophy, music, visual arts, architecture, and literature at the end of the 19th century - a period of crisis in faith and reason in the West. Vienna was central to many of these shifts and has also generally been the hub of musical outpourings in the past two centuries (Haydn, Beethoven, Brahms, Schoenberg, and countless others).
During this two-week trip we will explore the city itself, including museums, historical sights, and more, as well as enjoy the opportunity to participate in Holy Week services. There will be opportunities to attend concerts and see composers' house museums to experience first-hand the context of many of famous composers and their works.
This study-abroad to Vienna is estimated at $1,995.00, most of which is due during
