We are collective of individuals of both local and international origins known as 'From The Ground Up'. We are based in Kathmandu coming from various backgrounds to rebuild permanent buildings that are cost effective, earthquake resistant to a minimum standard of 8.0 magnitude and sustainable leaving minimal to no implications on the environment around us. We look to emplore the use of new technologies that still cater for the vernacular of the site.
Our beginnings started with a simple idea to help victims in need. We conducted case studies in Ghumarichowk and found that most people would not be able to afford building new structures for 5-6 years based on salaries. At least 80% are on minimum wage within the village barely making enough at approx 7000-8000 Rs a month to support there family. That is equivalent to 93.3 AUD.
We started to do designs for semi permanent structures and then during the monsoon season our work died off and our team more or less went its own ways because we are working 100% for free and could not support ourselves. The passion was good but the execution was not.
We were then contacted by an Australian carpenter who wanted to help out so our team got back together and now are proud to say that we are back into construction works. However our focus has shifted and we are now doing permanent housing and schools using new technologies such as earthbags and rammed earth (they're actually traditional methods except we've reengineered to make earthquake resistant) so that another catastrophe like that on the 25th of April will never occur again.
Out designs are getting recognition across Nepal and what we are trying to achieve is starting to become widely accepted as the path to follow. We are a team that is dedicated in achieving earthquake resistant low cost and sustainable goals. We will be doing the whole village of Ghumarichowk as our starting point and then hopefully employing our construction designs across Nepal to make it earthquake resistant.
We will be doing both profit and not for profit projects with the profit projects funding our not for profit projects as well supplementing income. We're small now but we have big plans. We're going to rebuild Nepal From The Ground Up.
