Support me as an Artist in Residence at a Desert Refuge
Donation protected
I submitted a proposal that was approved for a four week Artist in Residency program at the Desert National Wildlife Refuge. Located on the outskirts of Las Vegas (where I grew up), the residency offers housing at their Corn Creek site for an artist to devote themselves to creative work inspired and informed by these protected desert lands.
Though the housing is free, this is a residency that offers no compensation. Artists volunteer their time which may include leading a workshop or demo for the general public at Corn Creek or one or more of the other sites located around the more than one million acres of the refuge.
I will be the artist in residence from October 21 to November 18, 2024.
This is a crazy opportunity that has me more than thrilled. When I was 16 years old I spent a summer working with the Youth Conservation Corps AT CORN CREEK. I had not been back in many years, but while home in Vegas this summer, I visited the site and then later learned of the Artist in Residence program. I wrote and submitted my proposal within a week. A few weeks later it was green-lighted!
This is all feeling very syncronistic. I have been feeling the pull into the desertlands for a while. I have very little connection to the desert even though I grew up in the Las Vegas valley. But this past summer all of that changed. I explored the outdoors, painted landscapes and saw the desert with brand new eyes. I know that this opportunity is in alignment with the flow of my life.
Below is a short video of my changing relationship with the dirt and rock of the desertlands.
HOW YOU CAN HELP
During my residency I will hit pause on earning from my teaching which has become one of my primary sources of income. Any teaching I do will be pro bono for the public who visits the refuge. I will need help covering the expenses of my four week stay as well as some help with covering some bills back at home. Here's my breakdown:
- Bills at home to cover $550
- Gas which includes traveling between sites $250
- Art Supplies $200
- Food Budget $300
- Travel Expenses $300
- Incidentals $300
TOTAL : $1,900
I am not able to offer incentives for your support (just being real here!), though what I can offer is a watercolor postcard sent to you from me from the Desert National Wildlife Refuge as a gesture of appreciation for all who give any amount. It would be my honor and delight to do so.
