Empowering Girls through Education and Entrepreneurship in South Africa
In 2017, Nikki and I took a trip to Cape Town, South Africa. What started as a mission to support an after-school tutoring program for girls has turned into a school with the dream of building an entire network of campuses. Today, seven years later, we are thrilled to share that the humble beginnings have grown into a full-fledged school (with three campuses), home to over 160 bright, ambitious students and a thriving community dedicated to empowering girls through Montessori inspired STEAM education.
About Molo Mhlaba Schools: Molo Mhlaba Schools is a public benefit nonprofit organisation and leader in girls’ education in South Africa, with a mission to provide safe, affordable, quality education for girls in impoverished communities. It is South Africa’s pioneering girls’ school in Khayelitsha, as it is the first girls’ school, first Montessori school, and first STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts and Maths) school in Khayelitsha.
Founded in 2018 and based in Khayelitsha, Cape Town, the Schools provide girls aged three to 14 with a STEAM (science, technology, engineering and maths) and Montessori inspired education, which includes early literacy development, physical health education and outreach programmes for children in the local community.
The Molo Mhlaba Schools is a philanthropic venture that is building a network of low fee, independent private schools in underserved urban communities across South Africa. The beneficiary of the Schools work is these communities’ most vulnerable group: young girls living in urban townships.
Girlprenuer: Thanks to the relentless dedication of volunteers, supporters, and the incredible girls we serve. In 2020, Nikki and Rethabile launched the Girlpreneur Program, inspired by the boundless creativity, enthusiasm, and profit-oriented mindset of the Grade 3 students. The goal was to harness this energy and guide these young minds towards entrepreneurial success.
The Girlpreneur Program is designed to ignite entrepreneurial spirit in the girls, giving them the space to transform their innovative ideas into tangible business ventures. Each student pitches their idea to the team of volunteer consultants. Once approved, they receive R250 to bring their business idea to life. These budding entrepreneurs showcase and sell their products during Market Fridays in the winter and spring terms, gaining invaluable experience in business and leadership.
Through this program, several incredible projects have come to fruition, from homemade crafts and baked goods to innovative spa and beauty services. The girls learn essential skills such as financial literacy, marketing, and problem-solving, all while boosting their confidence and fostering a sense of independence.
However, this program needs backing. The growth and success of the school and the Girlpreneur Program rely heavily on the generous support of people like you. We are reaching out to ask for your help to continue and expand this initiative. Your donations will directly fund:
- Educational materials and resources for STEM programs.
- Seed money of R250 for the Girlpreneur Program, allowing more girls to participate and innovate.
- Training and support for the volunteer consultants who mentor the girls.
- Infrastructure improvements to accommodate the growing student body. Wifi/Transportation/Marketing Materials
By contributing to the cause, you are not only supporting education but also empowering the next generation of female leaders and entrepreneurs in South Africa. Every donation, no matter the size, makes a significant impact.
Join us in creating space for these young minds and helping them build a brighter future. Together, we can create a ripple effect of change that extends far beyond the school walls.
Thank you for your generosity.
Much Love,
Madeline & Nikki
