Support a young man in a wheelchair who dreams of riding the waves

Update Dezember 2022:

Dank eurer großzügigen Spenden, konnte Jannis seine erste Reise nach Amerika wagen und schon einmal bisschen auf dem Wasser trainieren. Leider musste Jannis seinen Plan mit den Weltmeisterschaften im Dezember 2022 erstmals auf Eis legen. Die Kosten für eine weitere Reise nach Amerika sind leider immens hoch und dazu kommt noch das anstehende Abitur. Jannis möchte sich zunächst um seine Schule und seinen Abschluss kümmern, um dann danach sich seine große Leidenschaft zu können. Im Ziel hat er die Weltmeisterschaften 2023 in Dezember.

Die Geschichte

Ich kenne Jannis, seitdem er als kleiner Junge zum ersten Mal zu mir ins Kinder-Fußball Training kam.

Damals schon war er schnell im Kopf und ein großes sportliches Talent – in den späteren Jugendmannschaften ein bei allen beliebter Mitspieler, ein dribbelstarker Organisator mit viel Gefühl für Ball und Spielsituation.

Dass seine Leidenschaft für das Surfen entbrannte und er mehr und mehr Zeit und Energie in diesem fantastischen Sport investierte, war keine Überraschung.

Dann der Schock: Am 31. Juli 2019 brach sich Jannis bei einem Sprung in die Wellen am Atlantik das Genick – seither ist er halsabwärts gelähmt.

Es ist kaum vorstellbar, welche Gefühle das in ihm und allen die ihm nahe sind, ausgelöst hat. Um so bewundernswerter ist es, mit wie viel Mut und Kraft Jannis und seine Familie, unterstützt von einem Freundeskreis, um ein gutes Leben für ihn kämpfen. Lange Aufenthalte in den Kliniken, teils völlig isoliert aufgrund Corona, endlose bürokratische Hindernisse – nicht nur die schwere Verletzung machte und macht ihm und seinen Eltern zu schaffen.

Das Surfen blieb seine große Leidenschaft bis heute. Unterstützt von einem Surflehrer aus München kommt ein neues Projekt, ein neuer Traum in sein Leben: Warum nicht dahin, wo dieser Sport angefangen hat? Warum nicht dahin, wo Adaptive Surfing Teil des Alltags ist? Einmal zum Ursprung des Surfens. Einmal da sein, wo die Profis surfen. Einmal Teil der adaptive surfing community sein. Der Gedanke schlägt bei ihm Wurzeln: Ein neues Projekt. Kalifornien!

Im Sommer 2022 fliegt Jannis mit seiner Familie und einem Team von Betreuern nach Kalifornien, dort wird er, wenn alles klappt, von einem adaptive surfer coach begleitet surfen. Für diese Reise wurden fast alle verfügbaren Ressourcen aufgebraucht – und doch kann und darf die Welle Jannis weiter tragen: Er könnte zu den ISA World Para Surfing Championships im Dezember 2023, sein ganz großer Traum.

Damit dieser Traum wahr wird, habe ich diesen Spendenaufruf gestartet.

Jeder Cent, der hier eingeht, kommt Jannis zugute: für Ausrüstung, Reisekosten zum Training Camp und der anstehenden Weltmeisterschaft, für eine behindertengerechte Unterkunft sowie ein Fahrzeug … und für die vielen anstehenden alltäglichen Ausgaben.

Und für seinen Traum, weiter auf den Wellen zu reiten.

Update December 2022:

Thanks to your generous donations, Jannis was able to venture his first trip to America and train a bit on the water. Unfortunately, Jannis had to put his plan with the World Championships in December 2022 on hold for the first time. The costs for another trip to America are immensely high and there is also his upcoming final exams (the Abitur). Jannis wants to take care of his school and his graduation first, then realise his great passion. His goals are the World Cups 2023 in December.

What this call for support is about

I've known Jannis ever since he first came to my children's soccer training program as a young boy.

Back then he was already quick in the head and a great sporting talent - in the later youth teams a popular teammate with everyone, a dribble-strong organizer with a lot of feeling for the ball and the game situation.

It was no surprise that his passion for surfing ignited and that he invested more and more time and energy in this fantastic sport.

Then the shock came: On July 31, 2019, Jannis broke his neck while jumping into the waves at the Atlantic Ocean - since then he is paralyzed down the neck.

It is hard to imagine the feelings this has triggered in him and all those close to him. It is admirable with how much courage and strength Jannis and his family, supported by a circle of friends, are fighting for a good life for him. Long stays in clinics, partly completely isolated due to Corona, endless bureaucratic obstacles - not only the severe injury made and makes live for him and his parents difficult.

Surfing remained his great passion until today. Supported by a surf instructor from Munich, a new project, a new dream comes into his life: Why not go where this sport started? Why not to where Adaptive Surfing is part of everyday life? Once to the origin of surfing. Once to be where the pros surf. Once be part of the adaptive surfing community. The thought takes root in him: a new project. California!

In the summer of 2022, Jannis will fly to California with his family and a team of caregivers. There, if everything works out, he will surf accompanied by an adaptive surf coach. For this trip almost all available resources were used up - and yet the wave can and may carry Jannis further: He could go to the ISA World Para Surfing Championships In December 2023, his very big dream.

To make this dream come true, I have started this appeal for donations.

Every cent that comes in will go to Jannis: for equipment, travel expenses to the training camp and the upcoming world championships, for a handicapped-accessible accommodation as well as a vehicle ... and for the many upcoming everyday expenses.

And for his dream of continuing to ride the waves.
