Fulbright Cultural Exchange Camp

Donation protected
Why I created a GoFundMe
This year I am serving as a Fulbright Malaysia English Teaching Assistant (ETA) in Kuala Perlis, a small fishing town in Peninsular Malaysia's most northwestern state of Perlis. Currently, I am  organizing a cross-cultural English camp in Thailand! In order to make this camp possible, I need your help. Below is more information about the camp and how you can make a positive impact through donating.

Thank you in advance for your time and consideration!

Purpose of Project
In collaboration with Thailand Fulbright ETA, Katriya Burkdoll, we are organizing an English camp called "Strengthening ASEAN Through Youth Cultural Exchange" from September 7-9 taking place in Thasala, Thailand at Katriya's school. This camp is aimed at providing an opportunity for youth from the ASEAN  nations of Thailand and Malaysia to engage in cultural exchange through international dialogue in English. Activities at the camp will focus on cultural exchange and English language development through team building and leadership development. This camp will not only provide a space for students to learn more about a neighboring country and its culture, but it will also provide a space for genuine friendships and newfound international relationships to form which in the long run will strengthen ties between Malaysia and Thailand.

Students attending this international camp are the next generation of leaders for Malaysia and Thailand, attending this camp will help them shape their countries’ futures and ASEAN relations.

Target Audience

80-90 students from SMK Kuala Perlis in Malaysia and Rachaprachanukroh 8 School in Thailand.

Why donate?
Majority of students from my school, SMK Kuala Perlis, come from rural low-income families and are not able to cover the cost of participating in this camp (USD 105). Your considerable donation can alleviate the overall cost for one or more students from my school to attend this camp. My hope is that this campaign can make it possible for each interested student to participate no matter how much their family is able to contribute.

Your support will provide  a once in a life time opportunity for one or more students to learn through cross-cultural peer-to-peer interactions. Many of my form 5 students (equivalent to high school seniors in the US) are still unsure of what they will pursue post secondary school and also have no idea of what kind of future career they would like to pursue. The opportunity to learn more about ASEAN and Malaysia/Thailand relations at this camp will expand my students' perspectives on future careers. Your donation will help pave a brighter future for my students!

All donations from this campaign will go directly to  help cover the cost of participation for students at SMK Kuala Perlis. The cost to fund one Malaysian student to travel to Thailand is USD 105 (420 Malaysian ringgit). This cost covers transportation (bus), lodging for 2 nights, and lunch/dinner for 3 days for one student. Since this is the largest budget item for this program your contribution of any amount will make a significant difference by making it possible for students to participate in this unique program.

** Please note that GoFundMe does charge a small payment processing fee per donation and deducts it from your donation. To ensure that 100% of your money goes directly to support this camp because every cent matters, please consider sending your donations for this program via PayPal using this link:   **

What else am I doing to raise funds?

In addition to this campaign, I am also seeking sponsorships from the U.S. Embassy in Kuala Lumpur, local businesses in Perlis and will host bake sales at my school to generate funds to cover the cost of participation for all students who wish to participate.  Through these efforts and this online campaign, I hope to raise enough funds to support 35-40 students from my school to go to Thailand.

Katriya is also hosting fundraisers and seeking local sponsorships to cover the cost of participation for her students.
