Hi, my name is Lami, and I am 21 years old. After experiencing CPTSD throughout my childhood as a young black woman with ASD, I developed complex regional pain syndrome of the right side of my body and CFS/ME. I also continue to develop comorbidities as time passes. So far, I also have been diagnosed with fructose malabsorption/early onset gastroperisis, mast cell activation syndrome, severe neuropathy, central desensitization, Ehler Danlos, and dysautonomia. The disorders resulted from my running, walking, and lifting on a torn ACL for 1.5 years. CRPS is the most painful disorder one can get diagnosed with and results in much social isolation. CFS/ME are isolating as well affecting every tissue in your body. Unfortunately, these syndromes are wildly under researched and lack any treatment options; just pain management as the condition worsens is offered. Despite my health disparities, I recently graduated Magna Cum Laude with a BS in Naval Architecture and Marine Engineering in New Orleans, Louisiana. Even though the disease will shorten my life, I aim to be an activist for climate change, for environmental racism is something I have had to become familiar with through my disabilities. As an engineering mind, I aim to study offshore renewable energy to contribute to its implementation in The Gulf Coast region and, hopefully, other coastal communities (particularly those of low-income/POC). Currently, I am accepted as an MSc student to The University of Strathclyde in Glasgow, Scotland, to study sustainable engineering, specializing in offshore renewable energy. Not only is The UK the leader in offshore renewable energy, but they are also the leader in CPRS/CFS/ME research. On top of this, I hope to see some symptoms alleviated due to fresher food and better quality of living, which could aid with my life expectancy. All in all, using my education, I hope to liberate myself from the racism and ableism of the US and find better treatment. Hopefully, I will be able to persevere and advocate and help those a part of my community see an equitable future that addresses climate change and does not leave them behind.
