Help Ahmed and his family evacuate Gaza ahead of a full Rafah invasion.
With Netanyahu’s promise of a Rafah ground invasion beginning, my dear friend Ahmed is looking to evacuate Gaza with his elderly mother and sister. With the horrific destruction of Khan Younis and all cities to the North by the Israeli military and with bombs currently falling over Rafah, Ahmed would like to get his family to safety in Egypt until they can return after the full withdrawal of the Israeli military from Gaza.
I met Ahmed almost 20 years ago, known as Guevera in his refugee camp for his community care and revolutionary spirit. Ahmed had met my friend Rachel Corrie at a youth center in Rafah before she was killed doing human rights work in Gaza. When I traveled to Gaza to help realize Rachel’s dream of a sister city between Olympia and Rafah, Ahmed was one of my daily guides. We have remained in touch all these years, through the many horrific bombings and open air prison conditions caused by Israeli border closures. Since October each message from Ahmed has both broken my heart and served as a reassurance that he is still alive.
"Every day we wake up to follow the news. We check any news. It may give a glimmer of hope to stop this damn war that has crushed everything. The biggest concern is the entry of the ground operation into Rafah. Where do we go? There is no place in the Strip anymore fit for life. The bombing has destroyed everything. The situation is tragic and the smell of death is spreading everywhere. I can no longer even express what is happening and what I feel, but I can say the situation is very tragic.”
The $30,000 we are raising will cover the $5,000 fee to Egypt for Ahmed, his mother and his sister to leave Gaza and enter Egypt and the remaining $15,000 will cover the initial cost of living as they get settled. If they can not get out of Gaza they will use the funds to help meet the needs of their family and neighbors in their refugee camp.
Thank you for digging deep and helping impact three lives in the midst of what is a horrific situation for so many people. There is tremendous power in transcending borders with love and support and rising together in the face of what is unfolding. May we continue to take the boldest action possible and work toward a world where all are free.
