Support A Black & Queer Social Enterprise

Moonlight Experiences is a social enterprise dedicated to the celebration of queer culture and belonging through tourism & nightlife. Through our carefully crafted experiences and activities, we educate and entertain whilst uplifting queer women, non-binary, Black/POC and marginalized creatives. By supporting local queer venues and creating an international network of queer culture. Moonlight Experiences is breaking down intersectional barriers and reshaping the way we navigate travel and community as LGBTQ+ individuals or as allies.
We would like the crowdfund to us help expand our services to become the first and biggest platform for LGBTQ+ experiences. To provide the means and space for everyone to experience authentic communities whether they are in their hometown or whilst travelling. It'll also help with the recovery of our nightlife in the UK and abroad, provide jobs for those that have been most affected by COVID-19, and provide solutions that support and help with the sustainability of LGBTQ+ spaces across all our communities.
About organiser
My name is Aisha Shaibu, I am a proud LGBTQ+ advocate who has always championed diversity, equality, and integration. I have worked in numerous organisations and charities to help tackle the intersectional inequality that exists in our society. My passion for supporting our community, travelling, and celebrating who we are inspired me to start an organisation called Moonlight Experiences. As an avid traveller for over 12 years, it became increasingly evident that there was a lack of diverse and inclusive services available for queer travellers, but Moonlight Experiences is also a means to sustain our declining nightlife spaces/venues. This combination of nightlife and tourism created a gateway to help change that narrative and to increase the visibility of QTIPOC members in travel.
Our impact so far
Moonlight Experiences is a start-up that has achieved so much already along with a small, dedicated team of volunteers. We are on a mission to change the perception of queer culture through tourism, whilst amplifying marginalized voices and supporting queer venues. We bring passionate activists, travellers, and locals together to celebrate nightlife, queer culture & the diversity in our community. Through our carefully curated experiences /events in London, we have educated allies, provided authentic and diverse cultural insights, supported 15 club nights and highlighted over 100 queer artists to over 5,500 people from around the world. Part of our experience is to make LGBTQ+ visitors feel safer in London. LGBTQ+ members don’t feel as safe whilst travelling with up to 73% of women worrying about traveling solo.
‘Safety is the number one concern for most LGBTQ travelers’
(World Travel Organisation)
Recognised by the Mayor of London for our impact in nightlife and tourism in 2019, Moonlight Experiences has played a part in supporting our queer siblings from countries where homosexuality is illegal or not celebrated. We all deserve to feel like we belong, not just whilst traveling aboard but also whilst navigating through communities in our own cities and towns. There are thousands of locals and expats who still feel like they do not fit in, or find it difficult to integrate. We can help change this.
Why support Moonlight Experiences? (a social enterprise)
The success of the company has been haltered like many businesses affected by Covid-19. Throughout the pandemic, we have been providing digital experiences to educate queer members and allies on the hidden queer history of the UK. These experiences reached a combined audience of 6,500 people and the profits helped provide financial support to queer artists (who are struggling through these unprecedented times).
But as we all start to slowly rebuild and recover, we would like to raise funds to scale up and continue making an impact, not just in London but in multiple cities and towns across the globe. So that wherever we go we can have authentic experiences and feel like we belong, whilst empowering the community at the same time.
Moonlight Experiences needs to play this crucial role as there is no company like it. Whilst some LGBTQ+ travel agencies exist, it is evident how much they lack in diversity and inclusion. There is a lack of adequate travel services for queer black or POC members, women & queer womxn, groups with accessible needs, or people who cannot afford luxury-style package holidays.
'LGBT annual travel spend exceeded USD$218 billion in 2018'
(Figures based on 26 countries and 130,000 participants -World Travel Market)
Moonlight Experiences needs to be at the forefront to make a change. Looking into 2021, we expect there will be a surge in travel, the need for community cohesion, the need for better representation of queer BPoC (Black & people of colour) in travel, an increase in amplifying marginalized artists, and solutions to help with the recovery of queer spaces. We genuinely believe that we can make a difference and that the economic power of LGBTQ+ tourism can be harnessed to achieve this. But we cannot do it without your help and support.
