Sometime after Thanksgiving, Andy’s health declined VERY quickly. He worked almost every day during the weeks of 11/27-12/8/2023, but the following week he felt “crummy.” The week after that (12/21/2023), he ended up in the hospital, fighting for his life against gangrene and sepsis and an impending leg amputation. In true Fighting Andy form, the surgeon was able to save almost half of his right calf AND get all the infection in the first surgery (Friday 12/22/2023). The following Tuesday (12/26/2023), they went to do a partial wound closure and wound vac change. Andy had healed well enough to have a complete wound closure and NO wound vac! Two days later he was transferred from the hospital in Oshkosh to the Rehab hospital in Green Bay where he spent two weeks undergoing intensive PT/ OT and the weekend of 1/15/2024, he was able to return home.
Since that time, he has been followed by multiple doctors in preparation for a prosthesis and has continued to THRIVE at home. However, one of his major hurdles before his prosthesis was that he needed to have triple bypass, open heart surgery on 4/15/2024. He is doing very well following this surgery, but at the time I write this, he remains in the hospital in Milwaukee and will be facing cardiac rehab along with the challenges of being an amputee. They continue to work on shaping the lower leg in preparation for his prosthesis, but we do not a have firm time frame for this process.
