Addiction is a profound and pervasive health crisis affecting millions of lives across the world. In California alone, 2.9 million people aged 12 and older have grappled with substance use disorders in the past year. These statistics reveal a devastating reality: addiction is not just a problem, it’s a disease.

Our team of passionate high school students, who have first-handedly witnessed the devastating impact of addiction, is committed to driving real change in combating this crisis. Through our dedication to integrating human practices at every stage of our project, we aim to ensure that our work not only advances scientific knowledge but also eventually offers tangible benefits to society.

We have identified addiction as a critical area of concern and are utilizing synthetic biology techniques to explore innovative solutions. Our research focuses on the G9a protein, whose increased expression has been related to symptoms of addiction. We plan to use RNAi technology created to specifically decrease overexpression of the G9a protein to simulate an addict’s brain, developing a model of therapeutics from newer models.
