Hello! Our team, including myself, are all graduating seniors at SUNY New Paltz majoring in Digital Media Production. Our film, El Camino Del Diablo (or The Devil’s Road in English), centers around the intense life-or-death situations migrants face when deciding to sacrifice everything. What it's like to surrender their home, relationships, and personal belongings just to seek refuge in a country that doesn't want them. A country trying to kill them off before they can enter the United States. A country where primary and secondary education is not a privilege. A country where the homicide rates don't even compare to that of Central and South American countries.
Have you ever wondered what countless migrants crossing the US-Mexico border endure to get into this country? Assuming those reading this is familiar with American politics, you're probably at least aware of the fundamentals of the US Immigration debate. However, it wasn't until the director of this film, Natalia, took a college course during her studies at SUNY New Paltz, and learned about the unspoken nuances, including a series of US policies that are still alive and active today, known as Prevention Through Deterrence (PTD). PTD is a term that is very conveniently not spoken about in the media. 2020 was the deadliest year for migrant death due to Prevention Through Deterrence. Jason De León, professor of Anthropology at UCLA, suggests that every president since Bill Clinton has blood on their hands for sweeping these policies under the rug. Additionally, no president will likely publicly discuss PTD, as a president that addresses these actions has to take responsibility.
Well, if the US presidents won't take responsibility, then it's up to us to make this film a reality, and we cannot bring this unfeigned story without the proper funds. To create the most professional and authentic story possible, we sincerely request generosity from you all. Whatever you're able to donate, even if it's just sharing this GoFundMe link around, will not go unnoticed by our ambitious and passionate team. Thank you for considering supporting our film; we can't wait to make this a reality.
