Fund Rainy's Urgent Medical Care

Hi everyone, on June 3rd, our one-year and three-month old kitten Rainy got his jaw stuck on his collar.

Unfortunately, the collar was not a breakaway, and he started to suffocate and thrash around. When we were able to get his collar off him, he went limp and involuntarily soiled himself. Once he came to, he was breathing extremely heavily and erratically.

Scared out of our minds, we took him to our vet, and they took one look at him and deemed him an emergency case.

Rainy stayed at the vet for 3 hours on oxygen support while also getting x-rays, bloodwork, and a whole slew of tests to find out what exactly happened.

They found that he had non-cardiogenic pulmonary edema, which is fluid build-up in the lungs due to trauma, most likely from suffocation. This was the source of his erratic, open-mouth breathing. He has been unable to take full breaths due to the fluid buildup.

We first took him home after his initial emergency appointment due to the vet clinic closing at 5:30 PM. We watched him all night like a hawk while administering his necessary medications when needed. His condition slightly improved, but when we took him to the vet check-up the next morning, the veterinarian said he was not improving fast enough due to the severity of his injuries. The veterinarian let us know that with this type of injury, the first 48 hours are critical to his survival.

So, my girlfriend and I decided that the best course of action was to keep him on oxygen therapy for the rest of the time at the clinic, and the veterinarian offered to look after him and give him 24/7 overnight care with updates.

Unfortunately, this has been a costly process. Even with the veterinarian generously halving the cost of the overnight care, we are out $6k and counting.
