Can you imagine a public school without a school library?
For almost ten years, Adaire Elementary School, like many public schools in Philadelphia, had to function without one. Fortunately, in 2015, thanks in part to a grant from author James Patterson and Scholastic, Adaire was able to pull books out of storage, dedicate a classroom, and begin the slow process of rebuilding its school library.
Adaire, which serves children in grades K through 8, doesn't have a staff librarian; part-time aides and parent volunteers now run the small, bare-bones library, which is stocked largely with outdated, yellowed books. There's a cheerful rug, but the walls are bare, the lights are harsh, and it's a less-than-inviting spot to read.
Help us make Adaire's library a place where readers blossom.
That's why the parents and staff of Adaire Elementary are asking for your help. We're raising funds to order new books, learning materials, and furnishings, like chairs, pillows, lamps, art, and other touches to make our small room inviting. Our vision is a warm, welcoming library full of reading nooks and study spots, where budding readers can curl up with a story or research a school project.
Unfortunately, with city budgets being slashed and schools struggling for funding, the help we need isn't forthcoming from the federal, state, or local governments. If we want our young readers to thrive, we need to step up as a community and support our school library.
Maybe you have fond memories of discovering new worlds through the books in your school library. Maybe you care about a kid at Adaire. Maybe you just want to contribute to the next generation of readers. Whatever the reason, we hope you'll give generously to the Adaire Elementary School library.
