(Pictured above: CPT Brittany DeBarros and fellow About Face: Veterans Against the War member, Claude Copeland.)
On June 23, Army Reserve CPT Brittany Ramos DeBarros gave this gut-wrenching speech about U.S. militarism and the war economy. Within days she was threatened with investigation despite her actions being clearly and fully within her rights.
Nevertheless, when she was put on 2 week Annual Training Orders weeks later, she continued to bravely share difficult truths through her #14DayOrders #14DaysOfResistance social media series which published a daily fact about the Military Industrial Complex, mostly from government data sources.
After what amounted to a hit piece by the Army Times and additional coverage by Business Insider and Task&Purpose among others, an investigation against Brittany was formalized and remains ongoing.
Given the long history of harsh repression, active military personnel of conscience who choose to speak up do so at great risk to themselves and need our support. Brittany retained a private attorney who specializes in military free-speech to represent her at a discount, but the costs remain unclear and could still be considerable depending on how Brittany’s chain of command decides to proceed. This fund has been established by her supporters to assist her through this process.
Please consider a contribution if you are able and/or share with your networks. Any excess funds raised will reinvested to support other GI resisters taking a stand for justice or war reparation funds.
