We are a Civic Group Located on the North Shore of Staten Island, NY; Port Richmond. We are striving to rename our community To "Historic Port Richmond" A Military Based Community. Port Richmond has deep Military roots dating back to the 1600's. We have landmarks and notable historic sites with a deep history of Military background. Some of the most notable individuals which have passed through Port Richmond are George Washington and his spy which is buried in Port Richmond at the site of Reformed Protestant Dutch Church of Staten Island. Port Richmond Staten Island has been long known to have a large community of veterans living in our community. In 1898, The Island's First Park was named; Port Richmond Park.
There was an urge from community residents to rename this park "Veterans Park" Because of the large Military Veteran presence within Port Richmond. In 1949 their efforts were successful.
Today, this Civic Group as part of our renaming of Port Richmond we are attempting to place Welcome Placards at three main entrance ways into our community.
Our first location will be at the intersection of Forest Avenue and Decker Avenue. When visitors enter our community, they will be presented with a plaque (shown) representing our US Military Veterans. Our price goal and is for assistance in raising funds for the sign and installation.
We hope the people within our community will participate in this great effort. Any amount is appreciated.
