EKG Funding for The MEWA Hospital

Donation protected
Hi. I'm Maliha, a rising senior in high school who's looking for a way to assist hospitals in developing countries. That probably sounds very cliché and unimaginable. I mean, I traveled all the way to Mombasa, Kenya in June of 2023 and spoke to numerous physicians and leaders in my broken Swahili language to address issues that had been set aside for well over their time. But let me rewind a bit, to the reason why this whole project arose. It was in April of 2023 when I lost my grandfather to a cardiac ailment. It was unknown what exactly caused his passing - it was assumed that it was something to do with his cardiac health since that had been a concern over his time.

After collecting myself from his passing, I started to notice a trend in my family who live in this area of Africa. Over the past four years, I have lost nine family members to cardiac diseases. And every time it was the same thing: fatigue, aching, chest pain, loss of appetite, and shortness of breath. Some of these people weren’t even in their 30s yet. That’s when I started to ask my parents about life in Mombasa since they were both raised there. It seemed that cardiovascular disease was among the many medical conditions suffering from a lack of quality treatment. And unfortunately, this trend is only continuing. According to the Kenya Country Report, in 2019, the total mortality rate from cardiovascular diseases (CVD) was 13.8%, and because the country doesn’t have a national strategy or plan that specifically addresses CVD, the numbers are at risk. That’s when I decided to take action.

I didn’t know if people would consider partnering with me or even listening to what I had to say. But I knew it wouldn’t hurt to try. After visiting some family in Mombasa, I began my journey to find out what the problem is when it comes to addressing cardiac ailments. I was in search of any limitations, looking for any possible way I could help. I started at the small-private hospitals where they were able to give me plenty of information and advice on where to find the hospitals which were in need. I took their advice and headed to the central area of town. This is where I met Mr. Sudi from the MEWA Hospital. Here, I was further introduced to the limitations and areas where the hospital needed assistance - finding that the best way we could help would be by purchasing an EKG for the hospital since access to equipment has been an issue. With the use of an EKG machine, physicians can provide early detection and diagnosis of cardiac diseases and in turn, save lives.

That’s why I’ve started this GoFundMe. By supporting this campaign, you are not only contributing to the purchase of an EKG machine for the MEWA Hospital but you are also joining a movement to promote awareness and improve healthcare in developing countries.
