The genz project is a film-based, storytelling initiative that focuses on empowering the silent youth of the world. The founder is Zamzam Elmoge, a junior at Lewiston High School. The four other team members are seniors at LHS. Julien Boone manages the team.
Zamzam and the team started the genz project because they saw the need to show older generations that Generation Z, the generation after Millennials, has the potential and motivation to change the world. The Project’s goal is to advocate for people who otherwise would not feel empowered to share their stories by providing a platform for their voices to be heard. The Project interviews and works with individuals of all colors, all religions, all genders, and all backgrounds. These collaborators are offered the chance to talk about their struggles, stories, and identities.
Last year, thegenzproject had its official debut when they publicly screened their first film Reason 4369, a documentary about Lewiston and its youth trying to break the stereotypes they hear about themselves every day. They screened this film at various locations all with very different types of audiences. This was also the year that the genz team won its first award, the catalyst for change award from the Maine Youth Action Network
In August, Zamzam lost one of her closest friends, Laila Al-Matrouk. They met at camp Seeds of Peace in the summer of 2017 and from there on they became ‘’real-life sisters”. A year later Laila passed away due to a horrible car accident. After Laila’s passing Zamzam decided that she wanted to dedicate the rest of her life to carrying on her friend's legacy and has decided that the best way to start would be to dedicate the next genz film as well as the next event to Laila and the rest of the youth in paradise. Specifically, the film addresses changemakers in paradise - youth that never got to finish the missions given to them while they were still physically here, but who still managed to accomplish so much in the little amount of time they were given.
Our goal is to raise $2,500 by the end of this month and anything will truly help. The donations will go towards funding for the film we are producing which includes rental equipment and other necessities. This money will also go towards our event that we have been planning for the past six months. Please help us make this happen.
