Funding For Public Art in Edward Everett Square

Tax deductible
Dear Friend,

The Pear Square Collaborative, Inc, a local 501 (c) (3) non-profit, is launching an appeal for donations to maintain the "Pear" and its accompanying sculptures, and to beautify their surroundings in Dorchester’s Edward Everett Square.

Flowerbeds adjacent to the art have for some time required fresh planting, while brickwork and other solid surfaces need regular power washing and cleaning. Also, a decade has gone by since the artwork has been washed and waxed. The present funding drive aims to raise $50,000 to cover the needed renovation and maintenance. We have raised more than half that already! Maintenance and landscape beautification will:

• remove existing vegetation from planting beds and install new low maintenance all season flora;
• power wash planter exteriors and brickwork (including more than 300 inscribed bricks donated by individuals/residents, businesses, unions and civic organizations);
• refresh paver joints with new polymer sand;
• clean and wax the Pear and its surrounding sculptures, and beautify and maintain the adjacent grounds.

The Pear is a symbol of our neighborhood providing sustenance to the people who have come to live here in Dorchester from all over the world. The art in the Square is meant to search out our past to understand our present, and show how history can play a significant role in building shared culture and trust among Dorchester’s large and extraordinarily diverse population.

The City of Boston owns the grounds and public art, and is responsible for major repairs, but the community is responsible for beautification and routine maintenance. Local residents have established The Pear Square Collaborative, Inc. to maintain the Square’s public art and foster its public enjoyment as a cultural amenity.

As a founder of the Pear Square Collaborative, I am asking for your support to help us reach our goal. Donations are tax deductible and may be made by clicking the "Donate Now" button, or at www.pearsquare.org/donate, or by check mailed to the address below.

Sincerely,

John
