I am a Boston-based screenwriter asking you to contribute to the funding of 84 FLOWERS, a feature film based on a screenplay.

My screenplay retells my vivid experience as a witness of the 2016 terrorist attack in Nice France, where a truck drove for two miles through crowds celebrating Bastille Day, killing 84 people that day. As the lyrics of the song featured in the screenplay say:

84 flowers on the promenade

Crazy gardener planted them in blood

84 dreams

Prematurely cut

In the name of what, in the name of what?

But this is not a film just about terrorism. It’s a love story between two people from very different backgrounds Kuba - a privileged New Yorker searching for meaning and Yasmeen – a Muslim war refugee in France rejected by the terrorism-scarred French society.

Their lives intersect, showing that immigration and love are universal experiences that cross the boundaries of religion and culture.

84 FLOWERS is really a story about immigration – it humanizes the immigrant experience as a universal experience, but also it is also a cautionary tale about the dangers and human cost of pushing immigrants to the margins of the society.

Finally, 84 FLOWERS shows how immigrants, women, and women’s bodies, are victimized today in culture wars by politicians in their drive for power. AS Yasmeen exclaims in one of the scenes:

It's like my body is just some weapon these men are using in some fucked up war over who gets to tell people what to think. Just leave me alone!

Ultimately, 84 FLOWERS doesn’t preach – it is a human-interest story that translates these complex themes into relatable and universal experiences of the protagonists KUBA and YASMEEN.

I want to assure you that I am not making this movie alone.

I have an established producer interested in the project. They are known for Conversations with a Killer: The Jeffrey Dahmer Tapes on Netflix, The Fallout with Jenna Ortega on HBO Max, The Kill with Samuel L. Jackson and Uma Thurman, and Spike Lee’s BlacKkKlansman.

I also have an Oscar-nominated director of photography interested in the project.

So if you decide to support this project, your money will be well spent by professionals.

One last though I want to leave with you is that I don’t just want to make a movie.

I want to make a positive contribution to our collective conversation about the role of immigrants, women, and religion in our societies, and the role of politics in sowing divisions for political gain. And hopefully, make a tiny contribution to making our world a better, safer and happier place.
