Funding Phoenix to play full time
Phoenix Weir Documentary
Phoenix is our eldest son who is currently 15 years old.He has been playing tennis since the age of 4 and through his junior years has achieved excellent national achievements including GB number 1 in both 14U and 16U.
His achievements have also included winning the doubles at The Road To Wimbledon, winning the 14U and 16U Fred Perry Championships, winner of a Tennis Europe, Numerous 12U, 14U and 16U National wins and various other national finals. Please watch the documentary link above to see more about Phoenix’s Road to Wimbledon journey.
Despite these achievements Phoenix only receives £3000 LTA funding and furthermore, he has not once been shortlisted for a place at the LTA junior National Academy despite reaching the British junior 1 ranking at both 14 & 16U.
We fund most of his programme ourselves but as teachers, this is not easy. Because of the lack of help, we train as a family team and work extremely hard to coach him, deliver a bespoke Strength & Conditioning programme along with booking and travelling to tournaments. The cost of courts, coaching, stringing, clothing, tournaments and travel is expensive and ongoing.
As Phoenix moves up onto the international circuit we feel that it is necessary for him to now train full time. He has already reached the semi finals in a Men’s British tour and an 18U ITF here in the UK this year.
Phoenix’s schedule requires him to train and travel abroad to build his world ranking on the junior ITF circuit. In order for this to work, Alastair, Phoenix’s dad, will leave teaching in July to take Phoenix on this journey. This will hopefully begin in August as travel re-opens.
We are asking for any amount of support to help us. Phoenix is an incredibly talented player who trains extremely hard and is self-motivated beyond belief. We need to give to him the same opportunity as those within the LTA academies. The support we receive will pay for trips and tournaments abroad along with the necessities like stringing, shoes, food and hotels. We currently have a two year plan to aim for the top 150 junior world ranking to allow Phoenix a chance in the Junior slams.
Please help us to fund Phoenix’s journey to play tennis on the pro circuit and reach his dream of being a professional tennis player. This support will really help us to keep the dream alive and give Phoenix the opportunity, we truly believe, he deserves. Thank you
