The Floating Hospital: Funding Surgeries with Mercy Ships

Hi! My name is Matthew, and I’m a Year 12 student from the UK, currently working towards a career in medicine. This fundraiser is a personal passion project, inspired by my own experience.

Over a decade ago, I underwent orthopaedic surgery at the Nuffield Orthopaedic Centre. That experience shaped my path in life. It gave me the chance to live, walk, and grow without limitations. Now, I want to give others that same chance.

I’m raising funds for Mercy Ships, an organisation that provides free, life-changing surgeries to people in low- and middle-income countries who wouldn't otherwise have access to safe surgical care. Every pound raised will help fund orthopaedic surgeries for children and adults who are living with conditions that are completely treatable, but often left untreated due to lack of resources.

More information about Mercy Ships UK Ltd: 18 million people die every year from conditions requiring surgery. This is more than the number who die from TB, malaria and HIV/Aids combined! Mercy Ships works to tackle this crisis. We operate the largest charity hospital ship in the world, delivering free, safe medical care to some of the worlds least-developed nations. Our floating hospital is staffed almost entirely by volunteers, who give their expertise for free. Since 1978 we have visited 56 countries, providing services worth over 1.2billion GBP
