Fundraiser for Elaine and Maria
Donation protected
Thank you for taking out the time to read my story. My name is Maria. My mother, Elaine, has been a front-line healthcare worker at the peak of the COVID-19 outbreak and continued to do COVID-19 related work for her job early on in the pandemic.
She and I recently tested positive for COVID-19. My mother was hospitalized the second week of February and has since been in a COVID ICU unit on a ventilator in a medically-induced coma fighting for her life. I am home caring for myself and two cats while worrying about her and her condition, myself, our medical bills, home expenses, etc.
Navigating house expenses without her has been a challenge. I recently received a medical bill in the mail from an ER visit for myself that my insurance didn't fully cover. It was only for one night in the ER and it was over $3,000 so you can understand why I am so deeply concerned for the medical bills she will receive for being in the ICU for more than 10 days now.
My mother also went through a difficult divorce less than 2 years ago that was the result of a horrible domestic violence situation. She is still struggling to pay her legal fees so on top of her situation pre-COVID and now testing positive and being critical enough to end up in the ICU, it hasn't been easy for her or myself for a very long time.
Any money collected for this fundraiser will go directly to my medical bills, my mother's medical bills, our home expenses and home bills, her existing bills from legal fees, my medications, her medications, her future medical bills, etc. Because my mother has pre-existing health conditions, I anticipate that she will have a long road to recovery if, God willing, she makes it out of the ICU. The money collected will also go to the possible rehabilitation or medical aftercare she may need. The money will also allow her and I to take time off of work to mentally and physically heal from the traumatic experience this has caused us.
Please pray for my mother that she heals and can come home to me. My mother is my best friend. The past few days have been incredibly difficult for me.
I thought it would be too triggering to include a photo of her on the ventilator. I was able to briefly FaceTime her before the ICU doctors put her on the ventilator. Because of new COVID rules, hospital visitation is not allowed or extremely limited and because I have COVID I wouldn't be allowed in anyway. I requested to FaceTime her when she was on the ventilator a few days later on my birthday because I believe she can still hear me. I wanted her to hear my voice and know I was there with her supporting her. I took a screenshot of the FaceTime, but it's very difficult even for me to look at it. Here is a nice photo of us pre-COVID.
