Erica was born with a very rare lung disease. It’s an inherited disease that causes thick mucous that eventually plugs and scars the small airways, the lungs over time lose the ability to properly oxygenate the body. This lung disease is so rare they do not have a name for it. She also has Bronchiectasis as a result of the lung disease she was born with. Bronchiectasis is a condition where the bronchial tubes of your lungs are permanently damaged, widened, and thickened. These damaged air passages allow bacteria and mucus to build up and pool in your lungs. This results in frequent infections and blockages of the airways.
Erica is 48 years young, she has 4 children, 5 grandchildren & another on the way. She has a whole team of support and a lot of people that love her and pray for her every day. She is at the end stage of her lung disease and her lung function is only 17%. She is on oxygen 24/7, and uses a non invasive ventilator at night. She is in the process of getting listed for a double lung transplant at Duke. She has to relocate to Durham, 2 hours away from where she is currently living, and start pulmonary rehab and complete 23 sessions of it before she is listed.
Any amount of money donated will go towards doctor/hospital appointments/stays, gas to and from those appointments, rent and groceries/necessities for when she relocates to Durham, co-pays/medical bills, medications/equipment she needs now and will need after transplant, emergencies, and anything else she may need help with! Since October 2019 she’s been hospitalized six times due to her lung disease, she was last hospitalized on May 18th 2020 for respiratory failure and was placed on a ventilator. The doctors, and everyone in her family did not think she would pull through and be able to breathe on her own again given the state of her lungs. But, she did!!! A true miracle!!! She is a fighter.
