“The best advice I can give to anyone going through a rough patch is never to be afraid to ask for help.”
As a mother, this is heartbreaking to write. My Daughter Kelsey, who is 28 years old and a full-time nurse, is now struggling mentally, physically, and financially after an unexpected cancer diagnosis.
After months of advocating for herself and countless trips to her family physician, she was told not to worry because Lymphoma does not run in her family. She was told to go home and read a book to help control her anxiety. Determined for answers, she didn’t give up.
After months of dead-ends from her family physician, she requested a second opinion. On October 20, 2021, Kelsey was seen by a specialist to be assessed and was ordered a stat CT scan done the following morning. On October 22, she received a phone call with the news that her CT results were suggestive of Lymphoma. Immediately following the scan results, an ENT specialist was consulted, and on October 28, she had a 4.1cm lymph node removed from her neck.
On November 2, 2021, Kelsey was diagnosed with Stage 2 Aggressive Hodgkin’s Lymphoma. It took her family physician seven months to tell her, “We may never find out what is causing your swollen lymph nodes" took two amazing physicians a week to figure out what was wrong with Kelsey.
Fast forward to the present day, Kelsey has completed four rounds of chemotherapy and has learned the results of her latest Pet scan. Kelsey has responded very well to chemotherapy, but unfortunately, there is still a 9mm node that is positive in her mediastinum.
We are hopeful and optimistic that we will receive a negative Pet scan after her upcoming radiation treatments.
As Kelsey’s mom, I have decided to create a GoFundMe to help alleviate the financial stress she and Brad are currently experiencing. Kelsey has exhausted all options and was denied Manulife Long Term Disability.
For those of you who don’t know Kelsey, she is a daughter, fiancé, sister, niece, granddaughter, and friend to many. If you ever had the pleasure of working with Kelsey or being one of her patients, you would know she was meant to be a nurse. Kelsey, you have spent your life taking care of others; now it is time for us to take care of you!
Thank you for taking the time to read Kelsey’s story. We will be forever thankful for your continued love and support. God Bless.
