In the wake of COVID-19, Stanford has laid off 56 kitchen staff members who work at Row houses. These houses include 550 Lasuen, Durand, Grove, Haus Mitt, La Casa Italiana, French House, Mars, Muwekma-Tah-Ruk, Phi Kappa Psi, Phi Sig, Pluto, BOB, Roth, Sigma Nu, Slavianskii Dom, Storey, TDX, Theta, Tridelt, Ksig, Piphi, 664, 1047, 680, ZAP, Narnia, Jerry, and Xanadu. These essential employees are not covered under Stanford’s current pay continuation policy and will therefore not receive the support awarded to people technically employed by Stanford.

Students for Workers' Rights (SWR) is seeking to raise funds to subsidize what these workers would have earned for the remainder of next quarter, which amounts to roughly $10k-20k in lost wages per person. The Stanford community is replete with the wealth and resources needed to support these employees. If we join together, we can help mitigate laid-off workers’ financial stress around supporting themselves and their families caused by this immense economic disruption.

As many Row houses are conducting individual fundraisers for the SOS staff in their respective residence, we plan to distribute a baseline share of funds raised from this fundraiser to each of the 56 laid off workers. We will then distribute an additional amount to workers who received less from their house. Exact amounts will depend on how much is raised through this fundraiser and the final numbers of house-specific fundraisers. SWR is working to stay updated on this data, which can be found here.

In trying to balance the urgency of the need for these funds with allowing time for people to donate, we plan to begin distribution of funds on April 6th, with further rounds of distribution to follow as donations continue to come in. The timeline of distributions beyond April 6th will be determined at a later time as needed.

In this time of uncertainty and difficulty, we hope that people will continue to collectivize in support of all members of the Stanford community.
