The Band: Dan Cash on Vocals, Mark Twang on Guitar and Lapsteel, Slap-Bass was played by Marcel Strohm & Grischa and Chris Sleazy on Drums in addition there is Sandy Wild on Vocals and Paddy Evans on Slap-Bass.
Based in Belgium Dan would travel Europe and play Gigs all over the place. His first love was music(well apart from his family). There was a microphone he would sing, even if it was not his gig. I know i will trail off from time to time thinking of a lost Brother(we were in the same Club/Teddyboys1983) while i write about him and his music.
There is one special friend that is/was standing by his side as a musician and friend, Mark Twang. Mark has his own Band and so Dan and Mark would only meet every couple of month and perform on stage or hang around and write songs together. So their band together was called Highway Patrol which never had the same people playing apart from Dan and Mark. Recorded, if it was recorded, happened in the Studio of Sandy and The Wombats. The sound engineer Marcel stepped in playing Bass from time to time when they recorded. Grischa and Paddy were more on the road with Highway Patrol playing live gigs.
Track by Track
1.: Honky Tonk Heartache: Starting off with a broken heart song on a down-tempo track that has a nice Country/Western feel. Subtle Slap-Bass just sitting in the background and pushing the Drums more to the front. Solid Guitar playing from the Lead Guitar to make this track sound full. Lovely harmonies from the three to set up Dan to present you a song to rethink your love for your partner. Dan’s vocals are just made for this song.
2.: Rock And Roll: He is not called Dan Cash for no reason. Finger picking Guitar as Lead Guitar and a cool Rhythm Guitar playing this up-beat track. Drums and Slap-Bass are staying just a step back not to take over the song. Let’s march with that Flag held up high for all the fallen Hero’s of ours.
3.: Johnny Boom: Yee Haw, How good can you tell or even better sing the story of Johnny Cash. By far the best song ever about The Man In Black. Great work between the Lead and Rhythm Guitar. Listen and learn. The connection Mark and Dan have/had is/was out of this world. That’s what you call friends.
4.: Hey Get Rocking: This will get you rockin’, boppin’ and swinging round the clock tonight. Opening with a cool riff starts this head boppin’ song. Just then the Rhythm Guitar will catch you. Once the Guitar solo starts you are in heaven especially the second the Slap-Bass is pushing forward with some fast and hard slapping. Nice rollin’ Drums that shine but never invade. Dan gets cool background vocals to help him making this song sound a bit modern without going over board.
5.: Falling Down And Feeling Low: Keepin’ in line with the up-tempo tracks, Johnny is never far away. Mark is just around every corner delivering cool riffs and solos on his Guitar. The Drums are just so solid that you can not break this Rhythm. Slap-Bass is filling out the background together with an awesome Rhythm Guitar and plenty of clapping and backing vocals to support Dan’s vocals.
6.: Rockabilly Blues: Reverb happy Country Guitar that get all the help from the Slap-Bass and solid rock&roll Drums to turn into a crazy Rockabilly Guitar. Dan does not deliver a Blues here. He nails it down with a fast-tempo Rhythm Guitar and true words to his rockabilly life.
7.: Selfish Crime: This Train is rollin’ fast. The Lapsteel is putting a mellow part down only to be taken over by the thunderous Drums and the finger picked Slap-Bass. The Guitar is just sitting in the background for a while only to pound to the front on the quite spots. It’s not a Crime and this song is differently not Selfish. This needs to be played with the volume cranked to 11.
8.: I Love You True: Get the Tissues out. This song was written by Dan and Mark and recorded as a Demo. It was recorded by Sandy and the Wombats. Judge for yourself which of them delivered it better. I made up my own mind already.
9.: See You Around: would you believe that this is the same Dan that the last couple of tracks. This could be Johnny himself. Beautiful Guitar playing. The Slap-Bass is just softly floating in the background which is perfect for this song. We will See You Around. At The Long Bar.
10.: Honkey Tonk Angels: Country picking Guitar on the faster side. Beautiful rhythm that gets your hip shakin’. Dan and Sandy trading places which show cases Dan and Sandy’s vocal ability's.
11.: Wild Rose: What a cover. Unbelievable awesome, great and you will fall in love in an instant. Nick Cave would definitely approve of it. Sandy’s vocals are more rough and powerful than the original and that gives that song it’s own caracter.
12.: Honkey Tonk Heartache (Duet): The dynamic between these two is just brilliant to hear. Again these two have such great harmonies and melodies together that it is a crying shame to realise that Dan Cash is no longer here with us.
13.: I Love You True (Duet Sandy&Dan) Song was covered by Sandy and The Wombats: This is the next Demo of track 8 but this time as a Duet with Sandy from Sandy and The Wombats. So much soul and feelings in this song. Just listen. Even as a Demo, worlds better than most modern songs.
14.: Still Number One: What a Team. Dan and Sandy made this track into a Country/Western song that is so full harmonies and melodic feelings if you compare it to track 1. But would you actually compare the tracks? Answer is NO. Each song and track is different. (This track is on the Devoted album from Sandy and The Wombats)
15.: Sex Is A Lie: Bringing you back to a faster up-tempo track describing the way of living on the road with a Band. The rhythm is pushing you to bop to the tune. The combination of Rhythm Guitar, Slap-Bass and Drums is great and then putting a Lapsteel over it on the breaks is cool and gives the song more dimension.
16.: What Love Can Do (Vocals Dan Take 2): No review on this song. It’s just nice and makes me happy to listen to Dan’s vocals.
17.: I See You Around: The official GOOD BYE song. Never mixed, just straight recorded from the Mic and Guitar. The true story about 2 friends (Dan and Mark). It’s been a long time since i had tears in my eyes and a lump in my throat. This is Mark’s way of saying good bye Brother. Dan and even Johnny Cash would be proud of you.
18.: Honky Tonk Heartache Acoustic: This was just an idea from Mark and Dan to produce an acoustic version of track 1. (This will not be on the CD)
Summary:
Well i would not call it a Summary as such, it’s more like a reminder and a story of a man who loved music. More to the point he loved Rock&Roll and Country/Western alike. With so many years of great music and gigs under his belt, he left behind a void. Nobody can replace this man who would give his shirt to anybody who needed one. Even during his bad days he tried to be positive. So make this a positive CD and buy it. Not only to help his Family but also to help to fund and hopefully find a cure for ALS.
