Funds for Creutzfeldt-Jakob Disease Research
Tax deductible
Hi everyone! My name is Thomas Hendrickson, and I am raising money for the CJD Foundation, or Creutzfeldt-Jakob Disease Foundation.
My beautiful mother, Elizabeth Hendrickson passed away tragically last year on January 21, 2021 from a rare disease called CJD, or Creutzfeldt-Jakob Disease. To raise awareness of CJD and funds for research, I am running my second marathon ever, the Lifetime Miami Maration (26.2 miles) on February 6, 2022. My mother was taken too soon from us, but by raising funds for research, we can help save others affected by CJD by one day finding a cure.
Creutzfeldt-Jakob Disease (CJD) is a degenerative brain disorder that leads to dementia and death. There are less than 1,000 cases per year in the US, making it an extremely rare disease (one report from the CDC says usually about 350 per year).
CJD symptoms can be similar to those of other dementia-like brain disorders, such as Alzheimer's disease, but CJD typically progresses much more rapidly. While treatment can help, this condition can't be cured. The average duration of the disease - from the onset of symptoms to death - is four to six months. Ninety percent of patients die within a year. In my mom's case, it was around 2 months.
Symptoms include:
- Personality changes
- Memory loss
- Impaired thinking
- Blurred vision or blindness
- Insomnia
- Incoordination
- Difficulty speaking
- Difficulty swallowing
Thank you for taking the time to read this and learn a little about CJD. I had never even heard of it before the doctors started speaking about it with my mom's illness. I hope you will take a moment to share this fund with others you know; email, text, link on your social media - any awareness is a positive and I can't thank you enough! Any donation you are able to contribute is appreciated, even if just a few dollars. Thank you for your time, your attention, and your generosity. My mom was the most loving and caring person in the world. Let's save others like her by raising awareness for CJD.
