Funds for Maria Ibarra

Maria Ibarra was recently diagnosed with cancer for the third time in her life. Some of you might recall her first struggle with the disease over 20 years ago when she overcame extensive chemotherapy and radiation treatment and survived.
After struggling to schedule an appointment during this pandemic and finally receiving the medical attention she needed, the results of a CT scan unfortunately revealed that a new growth of cancer has spread significantly throughout her body. Urgent treatment was needed. The good news is that Maria is a fighter and her spirits remain high as she now undergoes several rounds of chemo. Of course, the sessions take their toll, so she is no longer able to continue employment in her position as a theater teacher at a San Antonio area High School. As the result of her leave of absence, Maria will soon lose her healthcare insurance as well as her employment income.
With this urgent need in mind, we are asking for your immediate support in reaching our donation goal of $50,000 by December 31, 2020.
We have put together this page on behalf of our dear friend and colleague, Maria Ibarra, in order to ask for gifts and donations to support her medical and living costs.
Your monetary gift will help Maria pay for health insurance, incidental medical expenses, utility bills, groceries, and other daily need items for the next year. Your donation will enable Maria to focus on her health. We recognize that this is a difficult time for many of us, but any donation you make will be appreciated. All contributions, big or small, are welcome as we hope to provide some financial relief for Maria, who has given so much of herself to her family, students, and community.
Those of us who have had the pleasure of working with her, either on stage or in the classroom, know her boundless capacity for generosity and compassion. We know her as someone who is fiercely loyal to her beliefs, and this is reflected beautifully in her artistry both on stage and off. She is a committed theater maker and educator, having inspired hundreds of students and helping to create a viable theater program. Her dedication is so strong that despite experiencing severe pains in her body throughout the month of July, while attempting to seek medical attention, she managed to direct and perform in the Guadalupe Center’s Grupo Animo youth theatre program this past summer. Her family and friends have rallied around her to offer the support she needs during this difficult time.
Maria has been the spiritual nucleus of our circle of friends and families, and has consistently given so much of herself to others in their times of need. Now is our chance to give back to such a vital member of our community. We will continue to provide updates as she continues her treatment, and we pray that together we can make a difference by offering her peace of mind thus giving her the best possible chance for a full recovery.
All donations through this Go Fund Me campaign will go directly to Maria Ibarra for healthcare and living expenses.
