OUR PRESIDENT IS A CROCODILE

Hi Donor!

I'm Srishti, an animation student based in London. I’m raising funds for my short animated master’s film, that I’m currently working on. The film is about a teen girl who tries to convince everyone in her town, going door to door, that the President is a crocodile - except nobody believes her.

As the writer and director of the film, I need collaborators for aspects of the film beyond my expertise - such as sound design, 3D background design, and additional animators. To that end, I need additional funds to compensate my collaborators fairly -matching industry standards. All of the funds that I will be receiving will go towards the crew. I have finished the script, storyboard, animatic, and parts of the voiceover for the film. This has been done with out-of-pocket expenses, which going by my student budget, are now almost depleted. Furthermore, the film’s timing and release before July is crucial as India sees the general elections, that the film’s message revolves around. So that, you know, the crocodile doesn’t get re-elected.

ABOUT THE FILM

My two major inspirations for this story have been MacKinnon’s ‘The Emperor’s New Clothes’ and the classic ‘The Little Prince’ (A. de Saint-Exupery). Mirroring these, my film uses a child’s perspective to examine the absurdity in people’s carefully constructed opinions and points out the ignorance with innocence. With this film, I hope that this child can do the same.

This film is a satire inspired from the current political landscape and explores themes of ignorance, complacency, and political resistance within a global context. It highlights the lengths people go to justify their absurdities, taking reference from India - like normalising the covering up of entire slum areas with tarpaulin for an international convention, or ignoring the “co-incidental” increase in oppression of minorities.

With this film, I want the viewer to empathise with the protagonist’s frustrations, while reflecting on their own conduct. This idea came from my lived experience in understanding political ignorance and selective knowledge among the people around me. During the research for this film, I also came across more recent issues and themes I am drawing from, and aim to highlight further. I truly feel it is high time people see the absurdity in their arguments and question their beliefs - and disbeliefs.
