Friday morning 4/5/19 Krista rushed Tino to the emergency room where he was immediately admitted to the ICU and put on Life-Support. His family rushed to be by his side and got to Atlanta in the middle of the night. When they arrived, Tino didn't look very good. He was attached to a number of machines and on a ventilator. No one knew what was wrong but suspected either Meningitis or Encepahlitis. Tino was in grave danger and everyone there was obviously very scared. Thank God Krista brought him to the hospital when she did, or this story could have ended right there. Since Friday they have been running non-stop tests. Recently, the doctors have determined that it/was something called Haemophilus Influenzae which could have led to untreatable and deadly bacterial Meningitis.
Haemophilus influenzae, a type of bacteria, can cause many different kinds of infections. These infections range from mild ear infections to severe diseases, like bloodstream infections.
Doctors consider some of these infections “invasive.” Invasive disease happens when the bacteria invade parts of the body that are normally free from germs. For example, H. influenzae can invade the spinal fluid, causing meningitis, or bloodstream, causing bacteremia. Invasive disease is usually severe, requiring treatment in a hospital, and can sometimes result in death.
The most common types of invasive disease caused by H. influenzae are:
Pneumonia* (lung infection)
Bacteremia (bloodstream infection)
Meningitis (infection of the tissue covering of the brain and spinal cord)
Epiglotittis (swelling in the throat)
Cellulitis (skin infection)
Infectious arthritis (inflammation of the joint)
The staff at the ICU at Piedmont Hospital in Atlanta have been lifesavers, quite literally and Tino's 'bae' and his family have been by his bedside all weekend. He is currently out of the ICU, but is still under close monitoring and will continue to have many tests run over the coming days. Tino is still in pain and not completely out of hot water but things are turning towards the better much faster than expected.
As we all know, Tino is a trooper and very much appreciates everyone that has reached out via phone, text and social media. Keep the prayers coming!!
Obviously, with this happening, Tino will be out of work for sometime until he is fully diagnosed and able to physically return to the workforce. In an effort to help with his living expenses and other needed items, while he is unable to work, let's come together as family and friends to help our dear friend not have to worry about money as he tries to recover!
