I am disheartened to say that an amazing man has left this world. Greg Cawthon was a father of 5, grandfather of 2, husband to1, and friend to many. When I think of Greg, memories of love and laughter will always come to mind.

A message from Andrea Cawthon:

“Greg was 65 years old. We were married for 30 years. We have 5 children. Elizabeth, Jeremiah, Austin, Samuel and Ivy. And 2 grandsons. Stephen and Zaren.

Greg suffered a traumatic brain injury in 2011. He had to learn how to walk, talk, feed himself and dress himself like a child. He obviously wasn't able to work after that. I was a stay at home mom but I had a degree and went to work. That's how we ended up in Sitka. We cashed in his 401K and life insurance to pay the staggering $380,000 in hospital and doctor bills.

In 2015, we learned that he had prostate cancer. BOOM. Another blow. I had great insurance and he was getting social security disability. We got by.

In 2017, we learned that the cancer had spread to his bones and he had  stage 4 metastatic bone cancer. I cashed in my life insurance plan to pay those bills.

2018, we brought Greg to Louisville,  KY, our original hometown for treatment. $7000/mo chemo and hormone injections. It was awful. I took a higher paying job as a travel Medical Technologist and Greg went back to Sitka to be cared for by Ivy. In 2019, the cancer was getting worse so we brought him back south for better options.  I still had to continue to take travel assignments to pay the bills and his medications.

On November 22nd,  2020, Greg passed away.  He was a Veteran of the United States Army and a wonderful man.  Unfortunately,  since he had cancer, we could never get another life insurance policy for him. I know 10,000 % that money will not bring him back to us. But, it will certainly help in getting Ivy and Zaren and Austin (he lives in Juneau) home for his funeral and being a contract employee,  if I don't work, I don't get paid.

I absolutely love your heart Evan and I can't believe that our family is in need of funds to bury a husband,  father, grandfather, uncle and friend to so many.  I will cherish any donation that we receive.  It's been a long, long road and now he isn't suffering.  Our hearts are broken and will take time to heal. I will go back to work.  However,  we will lose his disability payments. We don't need mansions or fancy things. But I'd like to be able to stay in our home until l can find a suitable apartment.

Whatever you can do,  we will be eternally grateful for.

All our best,
Andrea Cawthon and family.  ❤”

I know that 2020 has been a difficult year for many of us, but nothing compares to the loss of a loved one. If you have the ability, and can find it in your heart, please consider donating to the Cawthon family. Any amount will directly help the family through this time with funeral, travel, and transitional living expenses.

One thing I know about love is that when you give it out unconditionally, it has its way of coming back around to you. Andrea and her family have always been a beacon of love, so let us embrace and support them in their greatest hour of need.

Thank you!
