Joyce Juan Manalo Medical and Memorial Fund

After eight arduous months of battling ovarian cancer, Joyce Juan Manalo, artist, Pinay community warrior, mentor, loving partner and best friend passed away on July 17, 2023. Joyce’s final weeks were spent at her home, under the care of Allan, her devoted husband of 28 years, and Boni Juan, her kuya (brother) visiting from Manila along with his wife, Elnora.

For decades, Joyce worked in the Filipin@ community, especially in the SOMA Pilipinas Filipino Cultural Heritage District of San Francisco. From leading Teatro ng Tanan and Kearny Street Workshop, to helming Bindlestiff Studio with her beloved asawa Allan, supporting countless shows and artists, from co-creating KSW’s Celebrate Your Body fashion show to her favorite project of all, co-producing the Tagalog festival of plays from 2016-2020. Her heart work and her spirit will have a lasting impact on the San Francisco Filipino American community she loved.

She will be deeply missed and forever remembered and celebrated for her integral role in shaping and strengthening Filipin@ arts and culture in San Francisco and beyond. Her warm embrace will be missed at the entrance of Bindlestiff Studio and the Bayanihan Community Center, along with her cool, charming, no-bullshit humor and loving personality.

This fundraiser has been created to support Allan in offsetting the still-mounting medical costs associated with many weeks of hospital stay from a stroke caused by the cancer, her chemotherapy treatments, and the significant funeral and memorial expenses incurred here in San Francisco and eventually in Manila. Any amount and gesture helps, from financial donations to sharing Joyce’s fundraiser through social media.
