Funeral, Medical & Ongoing Costs - Paid to Linda D

Donation protected
For those who knew our dad, you know he was an extremely hard worker, a very positive person and a man who loved God and his family above all else. He was a husband, veteran (Vietnam), brother, coach, friend and the best dad. Like I said, dad was such a hard worker. He was 70 years old and had worked full time his entire life.

As you may or may not know, despite working all of his life, mom and dad have struggled financially in recent years. There have been various medical emergencies and ongoing treatments for our mom that began a few years ago. A prideful man that was confident he’d be able to continue working hard for years to come, he had no sense of urgency to make the arrangements we now find ourselves handling. Following his sudden and unexpected death we have unfortunately found that there are no insurance policies or savings to help our mom. He had only just begun considering preparations for end of life; there was a life insurance application sitting blank on the kitchen counter along with an uncompleted application for VA disability support (his appointment to apply for this support was scheduled for two days after his death) as well as several unpaid medical bills from mom’s recent and unexpected wrist surgery.

My sister and her husband, my wife and I, along with other family members are all pitching in what we can and are going to do all we can to make sure our mom is okay, but as we know, we all have our own life expenses to manage.

Many of you have reached out asking how you could best support our family, and especially our mom. It was suggested that we set up this account so people could have the opportunity to help mom with the medical bills from before dad's passing as well as with the recent funeral and emergency room costs, and just the overall, ongoing costs of living.

All money raised will go directly to our mom, Linda Dunn.

We are waiting to receive the official obituary back from the funeral home. In the meantime, I included the write-up at the bottom of this page.

We can't thank all of our friends and family enough for all of the loving and supportive texts, calls and visits we have received.

With love,

The Dunn and Slater families

DUNN, GARY A.

Plainwell, MI

Gary Alan Dunn, born June 25th, 1949 passed away unexpectedly November 16th, 2019. He was surrounded by his loving family who finds comfort in knowing that he has joined his heavenly father and can once again hold his infant daughter, Sarah. Born to Joseph and Lucille Dunn of Kalamazoo, Gary was fortunate to have his brother Barry (Phyllis) Dunn as both a role model and protector. The two built a bond that lasted a lifetime. A graduate of Loy Norrix High School, Gary joined the army in April 1970 and was quickly promoted to Sergeant while serving in Vietnam. Gary went on to work at Stryker, Farnsworth, Midway Chevrolet, Rex Hayes, and most recently Centerpoint Church. Gary met his beautiful wife Linda through their work at Stryker. On September 23rd they celebrated 42 years together. His greatest joy was spending time with his children Laura (Kevin) Slater and Jake (Shanna) Dunn and grandchildren Eric, Jackson and Alaster. Gary always made his kids his number one priority. Whether it was choir concerts and cheer leading events, or the myriad of sports teams that he coached, Dad’s presence was always a strong one. He was passionate about baseball, especially the Detroit Tigers, and treasured the many years he spent with family and friends out on Pine Lake. As a member of Centerpoint Church he found strength through prayer and his faith in the Lord. Always a positive light, there was never a doubt how much Gary loved his friends and family. Be it a text, call or hug, if was evident that he was constantly thinking of those he loved. Gary will be greatly missed.

A funeral service will be held at Centerpoint Church (2345 10th St N, Kalamazoo 49009) on Tuesday, November 26th at 11:30am. Family will receive visitors prior to the service beginning at 9:30am. There will be an on-site luncheon immediately after the funeral.

In lieu of flowers the family has requested consideration for a donation to Gary’s wife, Linda via GoFundMe. All donations will go directly to Linda Dunn to help with funeral and medical expenses.
