One Step at a Time: From Mexico to Canada

On May 8th, I will be embarking on a 5 month journey, on foot. I'm hiking the Pacific Crest Trail, a national scenic trail that runs from the Mexican border into British Columbia, passing through California, Oregon, and Washington. The trail spans 2,653 miles through deserts, mountain ranges, forests and rivers. This trek through the wilderness will be, by far, the most challenging experience of my life to date, both mentally and physically. But in turn, it should also prove to be the most rewarding as well. I strongly believe that the things in life that are worth doing are never the easy ones.

As I walk for these next 5 months, carrying everything I need to survive on my back,  each step will bring me closer to completing my goal. But although this challenge will surely make me a stronger person, I want my journey to impact more than just myself. In following this idea, I will be completing the 2,653 miles in support of mental health.

Mental health is such an important focus for me because it has been such a huge part of my life. Whether we realize it or not, everyone is affected by it in one way or another, whether it be a friend, a family member, or themselves struggling. Like my hike, tackling the issues surrounding mental health is a challenging journey which must be taken one step at a time.

To start making a difference, I'm raising money for The Peer Project | Youth Assisting Youth program. It's a community-based youth peer mentoring program that services the City of Toronto and York Region. They recruit outstanding youth volunteers, ages 16 to 29, and train them to be leaders, role models and effective mentors to high risk youth, ages 6 to 15. Mentors receive training on mental health to understand and help their mentees develop a healthy lifestyle and positive outlook.
