First I'd like to thank all of you who have expressed concern and have asked how you can help. Here's the current situation with our daughter Gabby and son-in-law Omar in Puerto Rico:
As you all know, Hurricane Maria has devasted their beloved island. There is still no electricity and there won't be for quite some time (and their generator stopped working), running water is inconsistent, there are long lines for small rations of gas, there's a shortage of food and drinkable water, the roads are damaged, internet service is intermittent, etc. They are physically well and their home is in tact but their immediate future is of great concern.
Omar's livelihood is in the tourism industry which is now on hold until the island is brought back to life. This could take months. The container that held much of his equipment was tossed over in the storm and almost everything inside was destroyed, as well as the land he was renting to run his business. His insurance does not cover loss due to natural disaster so it is a total loss for him. Not only has his income been erased but he has a business loan that he must continue to pay which just adds more pressure to the situation.
Gabby's teaching job is also on hold. The school wants to reopen as soon as possible but I'm not sure how that will work for teachers and students alike who will have to return home to no power each day. Only time will tell.
Although they are being brave and taking it one day at a time trying to make the best of things, their loss of income is daunting and they are emotionally drained. Whether they leave the island or stay there during recovery their income will take a big hit.
Many people have have asked how they can help. The only thing we can think of is to send them money for food, supplies, the expenses they have and will continue to incur, and their plane tickets if they decide to come home. Asking for money was not our initial thought and I have been waiting to see what unfolds, but the situation is dire and it's all we can do right now.
Thank you in advance for anything you are able to do. We appreciate your love and ask you to keep Omar and Gabby in your prayers.
