Gabriel Olvera Heart Surgery

The Olvera family is a kind and loving family of 6 located in the East Valley of Phoenix, Arizona.  They are active members of Mended Little Hearts and participate regularly to support families of children that suffer from heart problems.

Gabriel Olvera was diagnosed with Critical Aortic Stenosis at 26 weeks gestation. At just one week of age Gabriel had his first open heart surgery. It was during his open-heart surgery that the surgeon found there was a problem with his mitral valve as well. At nine months of age Gabriel had a second open heart surgery to repair his mitral valve again. It’s been 8yrs since any surgeries. While at a recent doctor's appointment it was determined that Gabriel now needs a surgery to repair his aortic and mitral valves.  The valves have caused his heart to push against his esophagus and he is having trouble swallowing food which is difficult and life threatening.  Gabriel is a sweet and happy little boy enjoying the 4th grade, learning and making friends despite the challenges he has had.  

As if the family of 6 needed more pressure Gabriel’s mother Anna was also recently diagnosed with a congenital heart defect that she only recently began to experience symptoms.  Anna has a coronary artery anomaly that will require her to also undergo open heart surgery soon to have it corrected.  This procedure will require Anna to be off of work for weeks for recovery.  Gabriel's father Angel will be the sole caretaker for both his wife and son for weeks to months following their surgeries and will be required to take time away from his career as well. 

Although the family has excellent health insurance and emotional support they are in need of assistance as it relates to everyday living and travel expenses.  Gabriel's doctor (Dr. Emani) is at the Boston Children’s Hospital and they are struggling to fund the flights, transportation, lodging, food, etc…while also maintaining their home in Arizona.  Please do what you can to help them get through this difficult time no matter how small, it will help them.
