About Us
Since 2015, Galapagos Horse Friends has been dedicated to improving the lives of rescued horses on Santa Cruz Island. We are committed to enhancing the well-being of these magnificent animals, many of whom have been given a second chance at life thanks to our efforts.
Our mission includes raising awareness about species-appropriate care for equines, while also educating the local community, youth, and visitors about the importance of humane treatment and sustainable practices.
Research has shown that the presence of horses has positive psychological effects on people. Through meaningful interactions and emotional connections, we provide life-changing experiences that promote healing and personal growth for both the horses and the humans involved.
At Galapagos Horse Friends, we have taken on the responsibility to be a voice for these beautiful animals. We invite you to join us in this mission. Embrace the spirit of compassion—your support helps ensure the well-being of our herd, while also enabling us to continue our educational and advocacy efforts.
We are urgently seeking donations to expand our capacity to care for these horses, provide ongoing education, and raise awareness. Your contribution can make a real difference.
Support Us Today and help us continue our work for a better future for both horses and humans on Santa Cruz Island!
Help Us Make a Difference
As with many foundations, we face a range of challenges in our mission to care for the horses of Santa Cruz Island. But with your support, we can overcome these hurdles and continue our important work.
Our Key Challenges:
1. Limited Local Support
Horses were originally brought to the Galapagos Islands to serve human needs, but today, they lack the space to roam freely and meet their natural requirements. To secure the land and resources necessary for their well-being, we rely on significant funding.
2. Shortage of Qualified Veterinarians
Currently, there are no specialized equine vets on the islands. We must bring in experts from the mainland to conduct important procedures, such as castration campaigns to prevent overpopulation, and to address the horses' general health needs.
Monthly Operating Costs for 16 Horses:
Farm Rent: $1,180
Maintenance: $813
Potential Salaries: $1,620
Total Monthly Costs: $3,613
Your donation, no matter the amount, will help us provide vital care for our herd.
For example:
$813 will cover the cost of medicines, food supplements, and the maintenance of stables, fences, and pastures for one month.
$15 will help maintain the hooves of one horse, ensuring they can run and jump freely.
Become a Godparent
For a donation of $200 per month for a year, you can become a godparent to your favorite horse through our adoption program. This special program allows you to build a personal connection with the horse you support, knowing your contribution directly impacts their care.
