Letter from a Survivor of the Gyumri Earthquake,
It's always nice to give back and many generous Armenians have helped maintain a better way of life for those less fortunate in Armenia. Unfortunately, sometimes their assistance doesn't always reach the outskirts of our little country and I can relate from the personal experiences I had as a child growing up in Gyumri.
I am a survivor of the Spitak earthquake, which was a 6.8 m/s earthquake in 1988 that destroyed many cities in Armenia in under 30 SECONDS. I was displaced from my home along with many others. Several buildings of the small city were destroyed while others were deemed unsafe and demolished soon after. As a result, my mother and I were given a Domik, or what is known in America as a shipping container, to live in. Burning wood to stay warm in an uninsulated box was not an easy task every winter. Sadly, there are STILL some living in Gyumri that still live this way. I was fortunate enough to make it to America and have an opportunity to build a home for her and my sister. Something not everyone can do.
Like many other passionate Armenians, I am looking to give back. I am hoping with some support, we can send a significant amount of clothes which can be made useful by the next generation of Armenians in Gyumri. Personally, I was always thrilled to put on American clothing that made its way into our hands in a similar way. Gyumri has been suffering from poverty since the earthquake and it is an area that people seem to forget about. We are fortunate enough to help these people by sending them clothing in order to keep them warm and happy.
Please take some time to go through your drawers and closets, to find lightly worn clothing that you no longer need. Every single piece of clothing is accepted except used underwear, used socks, torn clothing or shoes, lingerie, and horribly stained clothing. Remember that these people need everyday clothing. We will accept newly packaged underwear or socks.
We will have collection bins inside of Kirikian Armenian School (174 Essex Dr Tenafly NJ 07670) and St. Sarkis Armenian Apostolic Church (38-65 234th St Little Neck NY 11363). IF YOU CAN’T DONATE PHYSICAL ITEMS, we always accept money to pay for the shipping of these items, which can be given through our go fund me page. ALL OF THE EXTRA MONEY NOT USED FOR SHIPPING WILL BE USED TO BUY MORE CLOTHING FOR THESE PEOPLE.
PLEASE SHARE this go fund me page to all of your friends and family, in order to help us achieve our goal of helping those people in Gyumri have warm and comfortable clothes to wear.
