A University of Oklahoma alumnus and Okie native, Garret Morton is a first-year Biomedical Sciences PhD student at Florida State University. He was finishing up a series of experiments on 12/17/19 before heading home for the holidays the following day. Unfortunately, Garret was seriously injured on campus. He was at the intersection between W Call St and Stadium Drive on his motorcycle when he was hit by a driver who immediately fled the scene . Students on their way to class witnessed the incident and were able to help suppress the bleeding before the ambulance arrived. Garret was quickly taken to Tallahassee Memorial Hospital where he has undergone two surgeries so far with a third to follow. His injuries are extensive. Garret has sustained a broken fibula, tibia, and hip, along with several lacerations and other minor injuries. Due to the impact, his knee has been completely shattered and he will have permanent cartilage damage to his hip. So far, his prognosis is that he will be wheel-chair bound for at least a year before he can learn how to walk again.
We are unsure about the total cost of Garret’s treatment, but they will include his current hospital stay, medical equipment, inpatient rehab, and continued physical therapy. Additionally, Garret will need to move ASAP to a first-story wheelchair-accessible apartment upon hospital discharge. Any donations we receive will go directly to Garret and his wife, Emily, for his medical-associated expenses. We are incredibly thankful for your support and wish Garret a smooth recovery!
