2/7/25 - A Personal Note and Update. Please support Gary in his next steps.
For all of us who have been supporting Gary through his health challenges this year, it has been quite the journey. That journey is now coming to another junction. We are back now to ask our beloved community to continue supporting Gary in his next steps on this journey.
When we first reached out to raise funds for Gary’s expenses, I was probably not alone in thinking that this might be our only ask. But true to his amazing spirit and tenacity, Gary has beaten the odds up to this point. Your support has made all of the difference in helping Gary cope, get treatment and move into this next phase of his journey.
I’ll pull no punches here: Gary’s medical journey is coming to an end.
Last week it was decided by Gary and his care team at Swedish that the best course of action is to stop treating Gary’s cancer and to move into palliative care.
This care regime consists of hospice care, quiet days and nights and the love of his family and close friends. There is still a lot to be done walking this path forward. While Medicare will cover his palliative care expenses, our financial help is needed again. Together we can help provide Gary with economic and psychological relief, by activating this campaign once again.
Our contributions last year were a key component in Gary’s wellness journey. Without the funds we raised, Gary’s treatments would have been compromised by a lack of resources. Allowing Gary to spend the necessary time at hospitals, doctors’ offices and outpatient treatment facilities without financial worries was key to the successes he enjoyed. We all rallied around Gary and provided the strength and courage to make his journey as successful as anyone could hope for.
Gary is upbeat and accepting. He knew this time would come. His body is letting go but his spirit is alive and beautiful. He doesn’t have a lot of strength and spends his time sleeping, listening to music, watching movies and enjoying the comfort of family. He is curtailing outside visits but making space for others when he feels strong enough. There is still life to live and much to do in this time.
What we can all do now is create the positive circumstances that allow for joy, ease, and peace to emerge. He does that for me just by being alive. He will always do this for me and the many others I see who know and love Gary.
I can give Gary my laughter, my music and my heart. I can also give him money to help take his worries away.
Will you join me in this noblest of missions?
Thank you,
Dan Thornton
--- Original Ask
Our dear friend and longtime champion of the Seattle Music Community, Gary Mula was recently diagnosed with pancreatic cancer, a surprise that no one saw coming or welcomed. Gary's health challenges came quickly, landed pretty hard and led to multiple procedures and a long stay at Swedish Hospital where he continues to get treatment from a great team of physicians, nurses and oncologists.
Like many in the music industry, Gary has had a career where he has survived by way of one creative project to the next, and like most, he hasn't been able to afford health insurance. We are asking all friends, family and members of our Seattle Music Community and beyond to help lift Gary up in this time of need. To pay back a man who has spent his entire professional career lifting up a music community as a Sound Engineer and Record Producer driven by his infectious love of art and the people that make it.
Proceeds for this will help our friend Gary with medications, lost wages, and simply offer him the ability to focus on care and making the most of his time with friends, family and music.
To stay up to date on Gary's care and on other ways you can help, you can also visit his caring bridge here.
