Gavin Geiger Craniotomy and Brain Bleed recovery

On the 21st of July Gavin had an aneurysm which ruptured causing a bleed on the brain. He was rushed to emergency where they then took him in for an emergency surgery. The coiling of the aneurysm was a success and we thought that was the end of it then and there.

On Friday 23rd, Gavin was rushed in for another MRI/CT scan and they found further bleeding (another aneurysm that had ruptured plus a massive blood clot). They rushed him in for a major brain surgery called a craniotomy. This was so they could have immediate access to the bleed in the brain. They have removed quite a large piece of bone from his skull to allow for swelling and so that they could drain the blood. The damage is to his left side of the brain frontal lobe. Gavin spent from the 23rd to the 1st of July in ICU. For 6 days he was in a medically induced coma fighting for his life. He is now in the neurology ward high dependency unit still closely monitored but the start of a very long road to recovery.

Gavin is expected to be off work for quite a long time and he will require a lot of rehabilitation to be able to walk, talk, read, write etc again. He will also require another surgery to replace the bone to the skull.

Gavin will need a carer (Deidre his wife) and a lot of equipment to make the house safe when he does eventually return home.

For anyone that knows Gavin, knows he is a very kind, hardworking and generous man that would give his shirt off his back if he thought it would help someone.

It is so hard to see him like this and it’s also very hard to ask for help.
