Hello my name is Illysha. I’m writing this on behalf of my 4 year old daughter, Gemma. Gemma was born with Esophageal Atresia/Tracheoesophageal Fistula, Tracheomalacia, and Scimitar Syndrome just to name a few things. Gemma has had 6 surgeries so far to correct some of her disorders. She had her 7th surgery earlier this week. It was an open heart surgery to correct her Scimitar Syndrome. She’s doing well and recovering fine but while doing the surgery her surgeons realized how complicated, complex, and truly amazing her anatomy is. She really is a miracle. She may need this surgery again when she’s older and, because of the discoveries made during surgery, she will be followed by cardiology and other specialists for a long time. Since day 1 Gemma has been keeping us on our toes but with us having 3 other children it’s been a little difficult to navigate and stay on top of things, especially financially. Dad is in the Navy so, unless we pay copays, she has to be seen on base. You can imagine with all the specialists she has to see that her copays will be plentiful. The base hospital is ok but Gemma’s conditions are extremely rare and she needs to be seen by civilian specialists. Her latest surgery was done off base with CHKD and even they said they had never seen anything like her ever in their career. Once she’s in a good place we would like to get her to Boston Children’s Hospital where they specialize in her condition so we can get our girl fixed up and on the right track.
