Gender Affirming Surgery For My Housemate

Hello gorgeous people,

I am trying to raise money so that I can help my roommate undertake lifechanging gender-affirming surgery. I know he would never be able to ask for this himself, but any donation would mean everything to him.

Currently, in Australia, gender-affirming surgery (i.e. Top Surgery) is classed in the same category as cosmetic surgery (which is so wrong!). As a result, the costs are not covered by Medicare. For comparison, as a cisgender woman with the breast cancer gene, I would be able to get the same surgery for a quarter of the price (with 75% covered by medicare). As nearly half of transgender people living in Australia have attempted suicide and 82% have considered it, it seems ridiculous that the Australian government would not take gender-affirming surgery as seriously. Along with the cost of specialist appointments, transitioning (which would vastly improve mental well-being and quality of life!) seems unreachable.

My roommate, is 20 and works full-time to save for top surgery. He hasn't been able to travel or go to uni/ tafe because he has had to constantly work and save. After two years, he had made it halfway to being able to pay for top surgery when his bank account was hacked. A significantly large portion of his savings was taken and now he is pretty much back to square one. He is the most kind, hardworking, loving and generous person you could meet, so it is heartbreaking to see him put in this situation.
