Gender Affirming Surgery for Scotia!

Please read this beautifully thought-out message from Scotia:

"Hi, I’m a 38-year-old transgender woman and work as a nightclub DJ and part-time web developer. DJing is the light of my life, but it’s often exhausting to do where cisgender folks who aren’t familiar with trans people or queer culture make up the vast majority. Like any other trans person anywhere in the world, transphobic behavior is something I’ve become familiar with. I am forced to become a little tougher every time, but it’s always excruciatingly difficult to cope with.

Gender dysphoria is hard to communicate effectively to people who don’t experience it. I experience it as something that causes me to disassociate in social settings, to have moments of peace interrupted by despair, or to feel exhausted after a good night’s sleep. It makes it hard to focus at work, and difficult to enjoy bodily pleasures that many of us take for granted. In the past, I have been hospitalized for suicidal ideation brought on by the suppression of it. Gender-affirming surgeries are about relieving such dysphoria - they might appear on the surface as cosmetic, but they relieve all of the above things. I don’t care about being beautiful - I just want the effects of testosterone to be diminished.

I’m asking for financial assistance for facial feminization surgery from anyone willing to donate. Please feel no pressure, whether you are a friend, family member, or stranger. Unfortunately, these surgeries are not covered by my health insurance and will come with a very expensive price tag of $15,000. They will cover my jaw and chin. Last year, I purchased a similar surgery out of my own pocket, targeting my forehead, and the effects of this were so incredibly helpful in my daily life. But I also paid, and continue to pay, many thousands of dollars for facial hair removal, hormone treatment, and wigs. The pressure to work as much as possible to pay off the debt is always very difficult for me.

There was a long period of time where I felt foolish that I’d stuffed my transness away for so much of my adult life in return for a stable but meaningless existence. And I feel embarrassed that others may see me as superficial in wanting surgeries. But the facticity and context of my life can’t be helped. I’ve been very conflicted about asking, but loved ones have encouraged me for some time now. I hope that nobody will feel any pressure to give money - I know that we are all fighting our own hard battles."
