Hi I’m Zeo Boekbinder, and I am making an album a little differently than I’ve ever done before: without any cis men whatsoever.

I recorded my first album in 2006, when I was 20 years old, in a band with my sibling Kim. Since then I’ve recorded ten albums and EPs. During these past 15 years in the music industry, I’ve worked with mostly cis men. I figured this wasn’t a unique experience, and some research backed that up. One study showed that, of the top 100 hits between 2012 and 2018, only 22% of the artists were women, only 12% of the writers were women, and only 2% of the producers were women. The representation for queer people was basically non-existant. So I decided to make an album with only women and non-binary folks - and I don’t just mean musicians: I mean engineers, producers, marketing, management, music video creators, graphic designers… everyone. This isn’t because I don’t love and appreciate the men I’ve worked with, but because I aim to make more space and more opportunity for women and non-binary folks in this industry - because that’s how we create equity.

With a grant from Canada Council for the Arts, we have recorded 12 original songs, and we need your help to finish the album and share it with the world. I invite you to be a part of this work, to create equity in a cis-male-dominated industry, to increase the representation of women, trans, and non-binary creators, and to make a kick-ass album.
