General Lee Brown was born June 26, 1933 to Melvin and Mary Brown of Prichard, AL. He was the third of seven children. General graduated from Central High School in Mobile, AL and was a graduate of Alabama State University, where he earned a Bachelor’s Degree in Education. He became a professional educator. During his collegiate years, he joined Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity, Inc., and was an active member throughout his life. He later earned a Master’s degree in Education from the University of Southern California. General also served in the US Army, from which he was honorably discharged with the rank of corporal.
General met his wife Eleanor, and they married on June 29, 1957 in Mobile. Their union produced three sons, Quentin, Gerald and Kyndall. In the summer of 1963, he moved his young family to Los Angeles CA, and in 1967 bought a home in View Park, where he enjoyed his life the remainder of his 88 years. He joined the ancestors on November 9, 2021.
General retired from the Los Angeles Unified School District, where he was both a classroom teacher and administrator throughout his thirty-five year career. Students from Los Angeles High, Crenshaw High, Gardena High and other schools recall his sometimes soft, sometimes booming voice and command of a classroom.
General was generous with his time in many voluntary capacities over his life. He volunteered at the Crenshaw YMCA and was one of several fathers who led the Hawks, a group of school boys who participated in organized sports, camping, field trips and community projects. General also devoted many years as a Trustee of the Congregational Church of Christian Fellowship. He was engaged in the affairs of his fraternity, with a particular emphasis on educational opportunities for Los Angeles-area black boys through support of the Kappa League.
General was an avid sports fan who enjoyed many sports. He took his sons to their first Dodger baseball games, Rams games, and whenever Grambling came to town, they attended the LA Freedom Classic. They even attended ABA basketball games. He loved the Lakers and Dodgers, and was a Raider season ticket holder for the years the Raiders played in Los Angeles. He also took part in an annual Super Bowl gathering of friends in Carmel-by-the-Sea. General was a volunteer usher for the 1984 Los Angeles Summer Olympic Games, and traveled to Barcelona for the 1992 Summer Olympic Games.
General leaves to cherish his memory his loving wife of 64 years, Eleanor; his sons Quentin, Gerald (Teresa) and Kyndall (Karen); four granddaughters - Janai, Lesley, Candice, Gye Nyame; and three grandsons – Terrence (Erin), Keith, Akil; his sisters Melvina and Cora (Herman), his brother Winston (Rochelle), a host of nieces, nephews, great nieces and nephews other extended family and friends he met along the way, including lifelong friends Freeman Jones and Elliott Chambers and longtime friend James Benson. He was preceded in death by his parents and his sisters Celeste, Hattie and Rozelia.

The Los Angeles Alumni Chapter of Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity, Inc sponsors a youth mentoring program for young men in grades 9-12 entitled Kappa League. Each year, LA Alumni donates scholarships to the seniors in the Kappa League program. Funds from this GoFundMe will be donated as scholarships in General Lee Brown's name.
