General Lee Brown was born June 26, 1933 to Melvin and Mary Brown of Prichard, AL. He was the third of seven children. He was engaged in the affairs of his fraternity, with a particular emphasis on educational opportunities for Los Angeles-area black boys through support of the Kappa League.

General was an avid sports fan who enjoyed many sports. He took his sons to their first Dodger baseball games, Rams games, and whenever Grambling came to town, they attended the LA Freedom Classic.
