Members of the Sunrise Movement are marching 400 miles from New Orleans to Houston for guaranteed good jobs that will stop the climate crisis and build a thriving Gulf South. Sunrisers are working with local partners along the way to elevate their critical work and fundraising to keep it going.

Chanté Davis, a march leader says "I am marching for good jobs to stop the climate crisis because the Gulf South needs to be seriously invested in. Young people like me are ready to roll up our sleeves and do the work to make sure we are prepared and protected from natural disasters and future recessions. To me, this march symbolizes my story as a climate refugee who fled to Houston, TX after Hurricane Katrina destroyed my city and the many other climate disasters I have survived here in Texas. This march is a symbolic gesture of me claiming agency over my future and as a climate refugee."

Gulf South trekkers are fundraising with partner organizations listed below:

RISE St. James is a faith-based grassroots organization formed to advocate for racial and environmental justice in St. James, Louisiana. They are fighting, Formosa Plastics, a petrochemical facility being built in their community on the graves of enslaved people on former plantations.

Vessel Project is a grassroots community organization that provides disaster relief to frontline Gulf South communities through mutual-aid, and solidarity. Their work centers on hope and the envisioning of strong, resilient, connected, and empowered individuals and communities.

The Descendant’s Project is an emerging organization committed to the intergenerational healing and flourishing of the Black descendant community in the Louisiana river parishes. The Descendants Project is committed to reversing the vagrancies of slavery through healing and restorative work. We aim to eliminate the narrative violence of plantation tourism and champion the voice of the Black descendant community while demanding action that supports the total well-being of Black descendants.

Our Afrikan Family mission is to empower and embrace under served youth and communities by reclaiming, restoring and revitalizing the cultural heritage, values and identity. Our Afrikan Family is a place where people convene, connect and celebrate the essence of our community in order to bring about healing to create prosperous, vibrant lives. We understand it takes a village to raise a child and live by EACH 1TEACH 1.
