Genete Mariam ገነተ ማርያም

30 km northeast of the historic city of Lalibela is a small town known as Genete Mariam. No less historical, it is home to the famous Genete Mariam church, with wall writings indicating that King of Kings (Atse) Yikunnoamlak built it.

 

In this town is a small primary school built in 1965 Ethiopian Calendar (= 1972/1973 G.C.). Students who finished their primary education had to travel, often on foot, to Lalibela or Kul-Mesk to continue their high school education. Repeated pleas by the community to help build a high school nearby fell on deaf ears forcing the community to build a whole high school independently. In 2019, a building with four classrooms was constructed and in 2020 the regional education office provided the town with 1 million ETB to help construct another building. There are now two buildings and eight classrooms recognized by the education bureau and teaching 500 students.

 

I was able to visit this school in May 2022 but was shocked at the state of its faculties. The school has 22 dedicated teachers who strive against several problems to help get their students to pass high school. There are now 228 male and 272 female students who attend grades nine to eleven. But it lacks adequate libraries, has a shortage of classrooms, among several other concerns: there is no laboratory, no computers, the buildings don't have fences, there is a lack of accessible water, and there are toilets that are in a deplorable condition.

 

This fundraiser, in collaboration with teachers from Genete Mariam high school, attempts to address at least one of these several concerns. As you can see in the image, the library only has one shelf full of books teachers bought from Bahir Dar for their students. These are self-guide books that are thought to help students pass matric examinations.

 

Through your assistance, we would like to equip the library with textbooks for 12 different subjects, i.e Biology, Physics, Chemistry, History, Civil Studies, Amharic, English, Geography, ICT, Economics, Literature, and Art & Design. With a calculation of 40 books per subject, for 300 ETB for each, it brings us close to 150,000 ETB. The rest of the money will be used to transport the books to Genete Mariam as well as to buy or build shelves in that one-room library.

የገነተማርያም 2ኛ ደረጃ ት/ቤት

 

ከላሊበላ በሰሜን ምስራቅ 30ኪሜ ርቀት በላስታ ወረዳ በጥንታዊቷ እና በታሪካዊቷ በገነተ ማርያም ቀበሌ የምትገኘው የገነተ ማርያም 2ኛ ደረጃ ትምህርት ቤት ቅድሚያ በሕዝብ ትብብር የተገነባች ነች።

 

በቀበሌው በዘመናዊ ትምህርት የመጀመሪያ በወረዳውም ጥንታዊ ከሆኑት መካከል በ1965 ዓ.ም. የተመሠረተው የገነተማርያም 1ኛ ደረጃ ትም/ቤት ተጠቃሽ ነው። ስለሆነም የ2ኛ ደረጃ ትምህርት ለመማር 30 ኪሜ በእግር በመጓዝ ላሊበላ ወይም ኩልመስክ መሄድ ግድ ይላላል። 2ኛ ደረጃም እንዲከፈት ተከታታይ የሆነ የኅብረተሰብ ጥያቄ በመኖሩ በ2010 የመሠረት ድንጋይ ተጥሎ በ2011 ዓ.ም. በሕዝብ ተሳትፎ ባለ 4 ክፍል አንድ ህንፃ ተሠርቶ በ2012 ዓ.ም. የመማር ማስተማር ሒደቱን ጀመረ። በ2012 ዓ.ም. ባለ 4 የመማሪያ ክፍል አንድ ህንፃ ከክልል ትምህርት ቢሮ በተሰጠ የአንድ ሚሊዮን ብር ድጋፍ ከኅብረተሰቡ በተገኘ የጉልበት እና የቁሳቁስ እርዳታ ተሠርቶ ለመማር ማስተማር አገልግሎት መዋል ችሏል።

 

የትምህርት ቤቱ መምህራን እና ተማሪዎችን በተመለከተ አሁን ላይ በ2014 ዓ.ም. 228 ወንዶች እና 272 ሴቶች ተማሪዎች ሲኖሩ 20 ወንድ እና 2 ሴት መምህራን ያገለግላሉ። በአጠቃላይ ከ9ኛ እስከ 11ኛ ክፍል 500 ተማሪዎችን በ22 መምህራን በማስተማር ላይ ይገኛል።

 

ትምህርት ቤቱ ብዙ ችግሮች አሉበት። ከእነዚህም መካከል፡ የቤተመጻሕፍት አለመኖር፣ የመማሪያ ክፍል እጥረት፣ የቤተሙከራ አለመኖር፣ የአይሲቲ አለመኖር፣ አጥር አለመኖር፣ ውሃ አለመኖር፣ የሴት እና የወንድ መፀደጃ ቤት ተለይተው አለመሠራት ወዘተ ተጠቃሽ ናቸው።

 

በአጭሩ የትምህርት ቤቱ መመስረት ትምህርት ላቋረጡ የመማር እድልን በመፍጠር ብዙዎችን ርቀት በመጓዝ የሚንገላቱ ተማሪዎችን ገላግሏል። ነገር ግን የትምህርት ግብዓት ባለመሟላቱ ተማሪዎችን ተወዳዳሪ፣ ውጤታማ እና ለፈጠራ ተነሳሽ ለማድረግ ችግሮች አሉበት።

 

በዚህ ገንዘብ ማሰባሰቢያ ሁሉንም ችግሮቹን መቅረፍ ባንችል እንኳን ቤተ መጻሕፍቱን እናሟላ ብለን ተነስተናል። ቅድሚያ ዓላማችን ተማሪዎች ለትምህርት የሚሆኗቸውን መጻሕፍት ማሰባሰብ ስለሆነ ለ12 ትምህርቶች (ባዮሎጂ፣ ፊዚክስ፣ ኬሚስትሪ፣ ታሪክ፣ ስነዜጋ፣ አማርኛ፣ እንግሊዝኛ፥ ጂኦግራፊ፣ ኮምፕዩተር ነክ፣ ኢኮኖሚክስ፣ ስነጽሑፍ እና ዲዛይን) 40 40 መጻሕፍትን ለመግዛት አስበናል። ለያንዳንዱ መጽሐፍ 300 ብር ብናስብ ይሄ 150 ሺህ ያደርሰናል። የተቀረው ገንዘብ መጻሕፍቱን ወደ ገነተ ማርያም ለመውሰድ እና መጻሕፍቱ የሚደረደሩባቸውን መደርደሪያዎች መሥሪያ፣ ቤተ መጻሕፍቱን በሮች መሥሪያ እና ለመብራት ማስገቢያ ይውላል። የተረፈው ገንዘብ ሁሉ ለትምህርት ቤቷ ገቢ ሆኖ ሌላ ችግራቸውን ማስተካከያ ይሆናል።
